Full Job Description

This post is an opportunity to gain experience of advanced PCI and TAVI in a high-volume UK centre including all aspects of interventional cardiology. This post would be suitable for a candidate who has a sound basis in PCI, and would like to further enhance their skills in complex PCI and TAVI prior to application for substantive consultant interventional posts.

Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the busiest, largest and most successful teaching NHS foundation trusts in the country, with around 16,000 staff and an annual income of £1 billion. We have a long history of providing high quality care, clinical excellence, and innovation in medical research regionally, nationally and internationally.

We're also proud to be the second largest provider of specialised services in the country. This means we support people with a range of rare and complex medical, surgical and neurological conditions, cancers and genetic orders.

Our staff oversee around 1.84 million patients 'contacts' each year, delivering high standards of healthcare.

We are committed to promoting equality and diversity and recognise the benefit in providing an inclusive environment. We value and respect the diversity of our employees and aim to recruit a workforce which reflects the communities we serve, and is equipped to deliver the best service to our patients. We welcome all applications irrespective of people's race, disability, gender, sexual orientation, religion or belief, age, gender identity, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity and in particular those from under- represented groups.

The post is to commence January 2025 for 12 months. This is a fixed salary post of £63,152 per annum with no on-call.

The purpose of this 12-month Fellowship in Complex PCI and TAVI is to provide extensive training in complex percutaneous coronary intervention using adjunctive techniques such as rotational atherectomy, intravascular imaging (OFDI) and also structural TAVI intervention at the Freeman Hospital, one of the largest interventional cardiology centres in the UK. The Fellowship will involve training in rotational atherectomy, laser PCI, intravascular imaging and TAVI, in addition to in-patient and out-patient assessment of patients presenting with severe aortic stenosis. There will be an opportunity to be trained in cardiac CT analysis with particular reference to patients undergoing TAVI procedures. The post-holder will have the opportunity of being first operator in TAVI for 100-150 cases. This is the 4th year of the fellowship scheme and previous fellows have achieved this number of first operator TAVI cases in the 12 months. They have gone to secure UK tertiary centre consultant cardiologist
positions after the fellowship.
