Department: In any given academic year, the Examinations team delivers over 50,000 examinations, processes c.4,500 examiner appointments for taught degrees, receives c27,000 taught submissions, and processes c.1,200 research examinations. One sentence summary of job: Invigilation duties involve the laying out of materials and question papers, monitoring the examination room and the candidates (students), assisting candidates, and accounting for all examination scripts at the end of an examination session. - Membership to a variety of social and sports clubs About the Role We are looking for reliable, conscientious individuals to add to our register of Invigilators. The appointment is offered on an 'as required' basis throughout the year, with the majority of sessions occurring between March and the end of June (possibly including Saturdays and Bank Holidays). Invigilators are scheduled on a session by session basis, in multiples of half days or whole days, according to their availability. There are 10 posts available. The work involves laying out documentation onto desks, some basic administration, and the invigilation of each examination session. Sessions are normally 4.5 hrs. Please note: that if any current graduates in the University wish to apply, then such applicants must hold Probationer Research Student status or status for one of the following degrees: M.Sc. by Research, M.Litt., or D.Phil.
You will have strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrable ability to remain calm under pressure. At peak times over 2000 students sit exams with us every day, and they need clear and respectful guidance. You will also be an experienced team-worker able to follow set procedures, but with the flexibility and initiative to make sensible decisions as needed. Proven written and verbal English skills are essential as is a good general standard of secondary education or higher. Our invigilators need to have a high degree of personal integrity and to understand the importance of maintaining confidentiality when handling exam papers, scripts and lists of student information. Examination sessions may involve long periods of time standing and manoeuvring around large examination rooms so a reasonable level of physical fitness is also a pre-requisite.
