Full Job Description

As an NQ+ IP Lawyer you will have the opportunity to engage with clients to understand their needs and to provide tailored legal advice and practical solutions to all areas of the BBC including our commercial subsidiary BBC Studios (Production and Distribution areas). You will have the opportunity to work closely with a diverse range of colleagues at the heart of our business including BBC programme and content makers for television, radio, podcast, online and social media including working often with BBC World Service and BBC News online. You will be an integral part of our team, working closely with our supportive and friendly senior lawyers to gain hands on experience and develop your legal expertise. Your work will be a diverse caseload made up of a mix of advisory and disputes work including;

  • Advising on all types of IP rights including trade marks and related rights, copyright and copyright exceptions, confidential information and television formats and contractual rights issues
  • Supporting the Senior Lawyer managing the BBC's UK and international trade mark portfolio, undertaking title clearances and advising clients on trade mark issues.
  • Working on Brand Enforcement matters, including takedowns, drafting letters and emails and giving advice on fake news content.
  • Taking responsibility for our low/medium value copyright infringement claims and supporting Senior Lawyers in defending substantive IP infringement claims and issued proceedings.
  • Negotiation and drafting of agreements in relation to IP in Technology/R&D matters and giving some support to the Senior Lawyers working on patent and AI related matters.
  • Providing IP and contract case updates to the team (and the business) and assisting with managing training/team meetings for the IP team.

    To be successful in this role, you will be passionate and enthusiastic about IP law. As this is a junior role within the team it would suit a NQ to 2 years' PQE lawyer. You will have good knowledge of UK IP law and some knowledge of the principles of European and international IP law, with a focus on copyright and trade marks. We will also provide plenty of training and support to help you take your legal knowledge to the next level. A familiarity with a variety of online public and proprietary legal databases (eg UK IPO website, PLC, Lexis Nexis etc) and experience of undertaking legal research is essential. You will also need some experience of dispute work and civil procedure. In addition, you'll have strong analytical skills and be a good communicator, with the ability to work collaboratively and to build relationships across a range of people and within a team. You'll have excellent written and oral communication skills, be well
  • organised and able to handle multiple tasks efficiently. You will have experience of advising clients directly, in person, by phone and in writing. Knowledge of the objectives and values of the BBC is highly desirable.

    We have an exciting opportunity for an NQ+ lawyer to join our specialist IP Legal team working for the UK's biggest public service broadcaster on a fixed term contract. Our highly experienced team advises on all types of IP rights and works collaboratively with programme and content makers, business affairs teams and technology groups to provide IP advice across the BBC Group. This is a junior role in the IP team and would suit a Lawyer in the range of NQ to 2 years' PQE. Our team is dedicated to providing exceptional quality legal advice whilst maintaining a work life balance. We work in the London office on Wednesdays and Thursdays with flexibility for home or office working on other days. We are part of the BBC Legal Division which is led by the BBC's General Counsel. Our division is made up of a number of specialist departments: General Counsel's Office, Intellectual Property, Employment , Litigation and Information Rights Compliance, Programme Legal Advice, Commercial DP and Tech, and Competition Law and Regulatory Law.

    Salary: £60.000 - £65,000pa plus London Weighting (£5,319pa), depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights. We're happy to discuss flexible working.
