Full Job Description

Environmental Change Institute (ECI), School of Geography and the Environment (SoGE), South Parks Road, Oxford OX1 3QY & Oriel College, Oxford OX1 4EW

This is a senior level position to which we are looking to recruit a policy-focused and experienced researcher with knowledge and expertise in the field of energy demand and use. The ideal candidate will have considerable experience of policy focused research, a commensurate track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals, and a track record in funded research and engagement. You will have a strong established record of scientific achievement and profile as an emerging leader in your field. The candidate must have demonstrable interest in the policy relevance of their work and a desire and drive for impacting change. The post holder will be expected to complement and build on the existing strengths of the ECI's Energy Programme and play a leading role in the management of the Energy Programme. The Senior Research Fellow will have responsibility for the development of the programme's strategic direction, contributing to the overarching vision and managing staff performance. The post holder will be expected to undertake the role of Principal Investigator on research projects, demonstrating and providing academic leadership to more junior members of the team including doctoral students. You will sit on the senior leadership board for the Environmental Change Institute and actively seek cross-disciplinary opportunities that involve ECI colleagues. Collaboration and teamwork are central to the ECI, so being able to work closely with colleagues in the area of environmental sustainability is vital. The post is available for five years in the first instance. Candidates should demonstrate:

  • The ability to conduct high-quality and impactful academic research in energy demand-led transformation and develop new avenues of novel research
  • A strong interest in energy policy
  • Willingness to engage with policy-makers, stakeholders, and the media
  • Experience in managing projects, teams of researchers and doctoral students
  • Track record of raising significant research funding across a broad range of funders
  • Significant experience in PhD/DPhil supervision and a commitment to teaching postgraduate students.

The Frank Jackson Foundation (FJF) is a major benefactor of progress towards positive environmental reform. Investments by the FJF have leveraged additional external funds in excess of £60m.
  • The Jackson Senior Research Fellows at the ECI regularly advise national and international bodies, including governments, the United Nations and local councils, shaping climate and environmental strategy and policy across the world. We offer very generous benefits, some of which are:
  • Generous holiday allowance of 38 days including bank holidays
  • Hybrid working
  • Membership of the Oxford staff pension scheme
  • Discounted bus travel
  • Cycle loan scheme
  • Plus, many other University benefits
