Full Job Description

Join the Electronic Engineering department for a chance to play a fundamental role in bringing together MBDA's missile systems: designing and integrating the electronics that drive our Weapon Control Units, Actuators, Telemetry & Communication Systems and more!

We have a reputation for quality and innovation, and we maintain this by encouraging original ideas, innovative approaches and allowing our Engineers the space to design and produce solutions that meet the challenges.

The MBDA Electronic Engineering Summer Placement scheme is an excellent first step in your early career; whilst in EE, you will work with a range of highly skilled Engineers who want to invest in your development and support you in reaching your technical potential.

Over the course of your 3 month placement you will work with a small team of undergraduate summer placement students to plan, manage, design and deliver a missile related project. How you meet the solution will be down to you and your team members to decide. To help guide you, you will be supported by experienced engineers from multiple engineering fields (Mechanical, Test Systems, Software, etc.). You will also have dedicated mentors to help you both technically and professionally.

The projects provide you with the opportunity to develop you skills and knowledge in one or a number of the following electronics design related skills:

  • Detailed Circuit Design.

  • Analogue and Digital Circuit Test Techniques.

  • Analysis and Characterisation Techniques.

  • Manufacturing (Machining, PCB Manufacture, Circuit Card Assembly).

  • Test & Evaluation of Design.

  • Programme structure

You will be spending time in the lab, building experimental hardware and in some cases may be writing some software and firmware. You will gain exposure to the schematic design tool we use (Zuken) and will continue to develop your time management and project planning skills. Depending on which project you become involved in, you may also use modelling & simulation tools such as Matlab and Simulink.

You may travel occasionally to visit other MBDA sites, although most of your work will be conducted on site in Stevenage.

What are the benefits for you?

You will be working with highly experienced engineers from a large range of engineering fields. This will allow you to develop and broaden technically and professionally within a multi-skilled team. As well as this, you will have the opportunity to be mentored and coached by experienced engineers in the art of designing electronics for military products.

All the training schemes within Early Careers Pro are accredited with the IET. Registration at Eng Tech level is a possibility for undergraduates who have 2+ Summer Industrial Placements within any engineering industry.

Whilst on the EE Summer Placement Scheme you will work with a wide range of our hardworking and experienced electronic engineers in a friendly and encouraging environment. This offers one of the best ways to commence your career and set yourself up for success.,
  • 10 week summer placement starting June 2025

  • Fantastic site facilities, including subsidised meals and free car parking

  • A placement that allows you to apply your university learning to real-world engineering projects and technologies

  • Flexible working

  • We respect new perspectives and experiences, and we value our collaborative ways of working. We are committed to growing and supporting diversity in our workforce and ensuring everyone has an equal opportunity to reach their potential. MBDA is proud of our employee-led networks including Gender Equality, Pride, Neurodiversity, Ethnic Diversity, Menopause Matters, Parents and Carers and Armed Forces.

We recognise that everyone is unique, and we encourage you to speak to us should you require any advice, support or adjustments throughout our recruitment process., You'll be able to choose between a variety of online learning platforms such as Percipio, YouLearn, Career Builder and Video Gateway. Each one is tailored to a specific type of learning. Speak to your line manager to find out more.

We encourage new learning and will provide up to £150 in financial support per year if you wish to participate in further study in your own time. You'll have access to our Learning Gateway, which hosts the formal course catalogue and is where you can select the right training for your role and future development. The catalogue displays which courses are being delivered virtually or are classroom based. If you want to lead a team, you might be interested in our management training, designed for people of all experience levels.

You will experience working independently, working in focused electronics teams, and working in dynamic multi-disciplinary teams, where you may be exposed to mechanical, software and servomechanism design, and you will have to work closely and directly integrate with them.

Each of these environments will provide invaluable knowledge of the company and our engineering processes.

What we're looking for from you:
  • Working towards a Degree in an Engineering, Software, Physics or Maths discipline.

  • A practical knowledge of software development would be helpful, but not essential.

MBDA is a leading defence organisation. We are proud of the role we play in supporting the Armed Forces who protect our nations. We partner with governments to work together towards a common goal, defending our freedom.
