Full Job Description

Freelancers are eligible to apply for an internal role if they are on a Worker Contract and they have worked continuously for 6 months. If they have worked for less than 6 months continuously or have a break of 3 weeks or more between engagements, they must seek Divisional HR approval to apply for an internal role prior to submitting an application.

Job Introduction

Radio 5 Live is BBC Radio's home of breaking news and live sports coverage, bringing its audience major news stories and sports events as they happen, along with programming designed to inform, entertain and involve. You'll work collaboratively with colleagues in the team and across the wider BBC to help deliver agenda-setting sport journalism to audiences across the BBC.

Main Responsibilities

You'll have the opportunity to work on our audio coverage of Premier League, WSL, European Club football and the major Men's and Women's International tournaments. Along with the Six Nations Rugby, grand slam tennis and tennis majors.. When it comes to making podcasts you'll be vital to the team that produces the Football Daily and more of the biggest sports podcasts in the industry.

  • You'll need to show a passion for sport and learn how to edit audio and communicate effectively with reporters and producers

  • Work closely with the production team before, during and after the output production

  • Generate ideas and stories and contribute to the creative treatment of an item or programme

  • You may be asked to support the production of a specific sport throughout the year working closely with the whole 5 Live Sport team.

  • Delivering to tight deadlines while maintaining high editorial standards.

  • You will be able to work flexibly to deliver live sport programmes from around the world and throughout the day and night

  • At all times to carry out duties in accordance with the BBC health and safety policy.

  • Proven record of contributing ideas for programmes, items and new treatments

  • Some experience in radio journalism or online, including the ability to identify key ideas, debates and issues within sport.

  • Ability to work well within a team as well as on own initiative.

  • Interest in developing or existing skills in creating digital content for social feeds .

  • Able to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of people.

  • Demonstrates a commitment to improving diversity in the BBC and understands how individual differences can benefit the BBC.

  • Effective planning and organising skills, delivering consistently to deadlines and reacting positively to changes and conflicting priorities.

  • Proven ability to locate relevant sources of information, contributors, guests and other assets using initiative, perseverance and persuasion and an extensive contact base. Has the ability to establish rapport quickly with a wide range of people within and outside the BBC.

  • The flexibility and adaptability to sustain performance, particularly under pressure to meet deadlines and changing priorities and circumstances.

  • An understanding of health and safety procedures and how they apply to broadcasting.
