Full Job Description

You will mainly work across digital and television output on a variable shift basis across the week and weekend, writing stories to a very high standard in a way that will really resonate with people from all communities living and working across the West country. You will also spend time with our planning team, and assist with the preparation and production of some of our regional television and local radio bulletins and programmes. There might be an opportunity to deputise as our on-the-day News Organiser or digital News Editor, have a spell with our Investigations Team, or report on-air for television. There will be ample opportunities to develop and grow in the role, particularly if you are willing to go the extra mile.

The BBC West television, digital and radio team has a long reputation for setting the news agenda every day that other outlets in the region can only follow. Its Online news stories are read by a rapidly growing number of people, and the regional television programme, Points West, is regularly the most watched programme of any kind, on any channel, on any particular day. We are now looking for two experienced journalists to join our energetic, imaginative and highly talented team, based in Bristol, to work across all aspects of planning, creating and delivering fantastic content for our existing and new audiences. We want to hear from you if you have a track record of regularly finding and delivering your own original stories across several platforms, and do not have to rely on press releases and the diary for your ideas., If you have the right editorial credentials, an honest desire to help us harness the power of digital and traditional channels to reach the largest possible number of people with compelling stories and content, we would like to hear from you.

  • A clear and demonstrable understanding of the main priorities of BBC Local, and an obvious and genuine passion to support the BBC West news team as it aims to develop and reach more audiences from different backgrounds with its content, particularly online and on social media.

  • A proven record of finding, researching and delivering lots of highly engaging, impactful and original stories of wide appeal for television, online, social media and radio.

  • Adept at using newsgathering (eg Wolftech), video editing, TV production (eg Openmedia) and online writing (eg Optimo) software.

  • Already being able to self-shoot confidently and effectively using iPhones, MOJO kit or small cameras would be an advantage.

  • Enthusiastic about regular shift working (ie early morning, late evening and weekends) as the rota requires.

  • A strong and versatile team player, but able to work solo for periods of time, sometimes without immediate supervision.

The BBC is committed to redeploying employees seeking suitable alternative employment within the BBC for different reasons and they will be given priority consideration ahead of other applicants. Priority consideration means for those employees seeking redeployment their application will be considered alongside anyone else at risk of redundancy, prior to any individuals being considered who are not at risk.

  • We don't focus simply on what we do - we also care how we do it. Our values and the way we behave are important to us. Please make sure you've read about our values and behaviours here.

Diversity matters at the BBC. We have a working environment where we value and respect every individual's unique contribution, enabling all of our employees to thrive and achieve their full potential.

We want to attract the broadest range of talented people to be part of the BBC - whether that's to contribute to our programming or our wide range of non-production roles. The more diverse our workforce, the better able we are to respond to and reflect our audiences in all their diversity.

We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from individuals, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion and/or belief.
