Full Job Description

  • You'll work as part of a multi-skilled news team, initially writing online stories for the BBC News website, but increasingly developing content for TV and radio.
  • You'll need a strong understanding of how to make a story come to life and you'll need to understand who our audience are and what matters to them. You'll also need a good understanding of news and current affairs and how they affect people locally.
  • You'll work as part of a team based in Tunbridge Wells, Brighton and Guildford creating content across the South East. As well as working on on-the-day content you'll also at times work as part of our multi platform planning team, setting stories up to work across online, TV and radio.
  • You'll be able to draw on a huge range of sources for story ideas and you'll need to be able to deliver original stories to surprise and engage our audience in creative ways.
  • You'll also need to have a flair for writing great copy and scripts. In particular we're looking for individuals with experience of a variety of production techniques across both linear and digital platforms, and those with a proven track record of working in journalism and production.

  • As an experienced journalist, you'll have experience of working in a newsroom, hopefully with experience of working across online, TV or radio or all three.
  • You'll be able to demonstrate a track record of strong editorial judgement which can be used across all aspects of what we do.
  • You'll be brilliant at time management and you'll know how to get the best out of your colleagues as part of a team.
  • In addition, you'll have a good knowledge of the BBC's editorial guidelines, our need for impartiality and a thorough knowledge of law.

    Salary: £27,300 - £35,150 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights. Contract type: 12mths Fixed Term Contract - shift work Location: BBC South East, based in Tunbridge Wells. This is a hybrid role and the successful candidate will balance office working with home working We're happy to discuss flexible working.
