Job Summary

Charles River Discovery are excited to be recruiting for a Junior Technician to join our Chemistry operations based at our client site in Hatfield.

The Junior Technician will work closely with the scientific team to support the day-day operations by carrying out a variety of tasks to maintain the laboratory space and ensure that standards are always maintained.

This would suit a recent undergraduate who might be looking for their first step in a laboratory-based career or someone who has previous experience in a Technician/Steward type role looking for their next step. The role is a full-time, permanent position and you'll need to be able to travel to our Hatfield site daily.

What you'll be doing:

  • Monitoring and maintaining stock levels in the laboratories and cold rooms.

  • Performing and maintaining housekeeping duties as and when required, to ensure the team areas are safe and efficient for the working environment.

  • Assisting with the receipt of incoming and outgoing packages/deliveries for the team with further responsibilities in logging and maintaining accurate records.

  • Carrying out work in accordance with Charles River and client Health & Safety Policy/Procedures.

  • Support the Cell Culture Lab activities in checking incubators and water bath maintenance.

  • Deep cleaning of incubators and flow hoods - further training will be provided on this.

  • Skills and Experience:
  • Minimum of A Levels or BTEC in a scientific discipline, degree level qualifications within the sciences preferred.

  • Some experience of working in a laboratory based, commercial environment - such as through a placement/industrial year or other, similar roles.

  • Strong communication and organizational skills, able to appropriately manage time to prioritise tasks as needed.

  • Knowledge and understanding of basic chemistry/biology.

  • Knowledge and understanding of chemicals classification/labelling.


  • Desirable:
  • Previous experience as a Laboratory Technician or Laboratory Steward within CRO/Pharma/Biotech setting highly advantageous.
