Full Job Description

As a Laboratory Technician specialising in sample preparation for Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), and Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES), Optical Microscopy (OM) in the Institute's Advanced Materials Characterisation Centre, you will play a crucial role in supporting cutting-edge research and development projects. Your primary responsibilities will include sample preparation, the operation of metallurgical and analytical instruments, and collaboration with researchers to achieve project goals.,

  • Sample preparation

  • Prepare samples for analysis, which may involve cutting, grinding, polishing, or coating, depending on the analysis technique.

  • Ensure sample handling and storage adhere to safety and quality standards.


  • Instrument Operation and Maintenance:

  • Operate and maintain SEM, XRD, XRF, OM and OES instruments.

  • Perform routine instrument calibrations and quality control checks.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve instrument issues to ensure optimal performance.

  • Execute data collection using the specified analytical techniques, ensuring accurate and reproducible results.

  • Safety and Quality Assurance:

  • Follow established safety protocols and guidelines to maintain a safe working environment.

  • Adhere to quality assurance and quality control procedures to ensure data accuracy and reliability.

  • Work closely with research teams and provide technical support for their projects.

  • Instrument Upkeep and Inventory Management:

  • Maintain an inventory of consumables and ensure the availability of necessary supplies.

  • Coordinate with vendors and service providers for instrument maintenance and repairs.

    Proficiency in range of sample preparation techniques for both metallurgical and analytical assessments and data analysis methods.

  • Previous experience working with SEM, XRD, XRF, OM and OES instruments is desirable.

  • Working knowledge of lab-based environments desirable.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
