Full Job Description

  • Successful applicants for these positions will work within our team alongside our visiting scientists. Time within the roles will be shared between development projects and supporting experimental commissioning.

  • The post holder will directly play a part to the development, testing and integration of new diagnostics and equipment. This may involve designing and constructing hardware, and/or software development. You are encouraged to pitch in project ideas corresponding to your skills and interests.

  • Key duties include:

  • Building optical assemblies in the laboratory for testing

  • Calibrating diagnostics against known inputs, including radioactive sources for scintillators, and low power lasers for optical.

  • Working with Gemini/EPAC/community scientists to install and operate diagnostics

  • Developing and utilising analysis codes.

    The EPAC Detectors Group at the CLF is looking for a hard-working and motivated placement student who enjoys a mix of theoretical and practical work to join our team of PhD students, Staff Scientists, and Engineers. The EPAC facility commissioning will be underway when you join, and it will be our role in the detectors team to develop, commission, and deploy novel diagnostic schemes on the new system. Our team regularly engages with groups from across campus, including STFC Technology, RAL Space, and ISIS Neutron and Muon Source to maximise the impact and success of project proving an excellent opportunity for you to experience multiple subject areas and meet scientists from different fields., Currently enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and returning to university/studies to complete your undergraduate degree following the placement (S)

  • Are required or have requested to take an industrial placement year (S)

  • Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement (S)

  • Able to commence employment in summer 2025 (S)

  • Good understanding of basic physics concepts (optics, electromagnetism, lasers) (S&I)

  • Computer programming experience (e.g. Python, C++,) (S&I)

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills (S&I)

  • Highly motivated and able to work independently (S&I)

  • Demonstrate good team working capabilities (S&I)


  • Desirable:

  • Good problem-solving skills (I)

  • Responsible approach to health and safety (S&I)
