Full Job Description

The Department of Physics is looking to recruit a Laser Safety Officer. The postholder will play a key role in laser management in the Department of Physics, providing expert safety guidance and support for lasers in research and teaching activities in the department. You will be experienced in laser based equipment, techniques and processes. The role will be to manage and deliver the departmental laser safety management programme. This will include advising on laser risk assessments and lab local rules, alignment procedures, delivering laser safety training, advising on equipment purchases, coordinating and reviewing laser safety activities across the research groups and teaching activities, representing Physics at relevant committees, and advising the Head of Department Office on current best practices in laser use and safety. You will work on a range of projects supporting the research groups and teaching laboratories in the Department of Physics. The focus will be on overseeing the safety management of all lasers in the department of Physics. You will be a central point of expertise, creating a unified understanding of the department's laser safety requirements and resources. The role will be to manage and deliver the departmental laser management programme. This will include advising on laser risk assessments and lab local rules, alignment procedures, delivering laser safety training, advising on equipment purchases, coordinating and reviewing laser safety activities across the research groups and teaching activities, representing Physics at relevant committees, and advising the Head of Department Office on current best practices in laser use and safety.     We are looking for an individual with experience in laser safety with the following attributes :
  • Educated to degree level in laser physics or similar disciplines or have equivalent experience in industrial setting or other workplaces where lasers are used.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills for effective interaction with other support services members, technical, academic, teaching staff, students and external contacts.
  • Experience in laser based experimental techniques and processes
  • Demonstrable experience of operating and maintain laser systems
  • Experience of undertaking and assisting with optical experiments Experience of day-to-day supervision of research students and researchers in a laboratory environment
  • Experience of working in a laser laboratory environment or similar environment
  • Ability to operate and maintain hazardous lasers and to complete laser safety related calculations
  • Ability to demonstrate application of laser safety principles in research or similar environment.
  • A understanding of hazards, risks and appropriate control measures associated with lasers and their safe use.
  • Able to produce clear and concise written material.
