Full Job Description

The responsibilities of the role are as follows, organised into the 5 core competencies of the role:

  • Modelling Data


  • Accountable for the overall quality of data integrations; both technical and domain-oriented decisions surrounding data inputs, transformations and outputs.

  • Responsible for steering all additions to the data warehouse, ensuring that new data feeds are optimally configured with consideration to schema, storage and ongoing updates.

  • Responsible for designing, in consultation with domain experts across our extended team, data models that sensibly organise required transformations of the data.

  • Responsible for delivering/overseeing the team's delivery of the data transformations required for new integrations in DBT SQL.

  • Responsible for the curation of datasets in our primary BI tool and the evolution of these datasets, ensuring existing dependencies are protected.


  • Assuring Data Quality & Governance
  • Accountable for the overall integrity of our data processing, ensuring transformations are well-tested, bugs are effectively triaged and any problems.are solved swiftly.

  • Responsible for ensuring appropriate security across our entire data warehouse.

  • Responsible for ensuring all data is handled with appropriate considerations to ethical, legal and personal data standards.


  • Providing Technical Leadership
  • Responsible for proactively supporting the Head of Data & Engineering on the technical aspects of our overall data platform in terms of its scale and evolution, and surrounding development & CI tooling.

  • Responsible for conducting thorough code reviews and ensuring all merge requests are of high quality before merging.

  • Responsible for staying abreast of the data analytics industry, especially the ecosystem surrounding our core stack, to ensure we are aware of upcoming change and opportunity.

  • Responsible for coaching the team, to ensure high quality output and supporting individual career development.

  • Responsible for coordinating delivery, ensuring status is always observable in tickets, estimations are tight and releases are well-coordinated and communicated.

  • Responsible for participating in various forums across the business where a technical point of view is required, and being a consistent ambassador for Apollo.

  • Responsible for collaborating with our key user groups to ensure a full understanding of their needs and that those needs are met in our data outputs.


  • Ensuring Best Practice
  • Accountable for the overall adherence to our standards across our SQL codebases and BI tools.

  • Responsible for the health of our data transformations and semantic layer in terms of being well-organised, regularly pruned and highly maintainable.

  • Responsible for ensuring that appropriate documentation exists and is kept up to date as deemed necessary.

  • Responsible for keeping track of technical debt alongside delivery alongside the bigger picture, ensuring you protect regular time to review.


  • Solving Problems
  • Accountable for the identification, communication and resolving of technical problems, and fostering a culture of quick-issue spotting and over-communication.

  • Responsible for ensuring the team approach problems methodically, logically dissecting the issue to understand root cause and then fixing the source, not the symptom.

    In order to thrive in this role, you will need the following skills & experience:

  • Extensive experience of analytics engineering, data management, business intelligence or related fields, demonstrating a track record of designing, implementing and maintaining robust data systems.

  • Experience working with relatively large datasets, ensuring their consistency and accuracy.

  • Deep experience architecting data models - ideally traditional dimensional models alongside more modern cloud-native approaches.

  • Significant experience with DBT, SQL and Jinja and cloud computing platforms.

  • Knowledge of data governance practices and data privacy considerations.

  • Experience with writing tests and evaluating test coverage.

  • Proven experience in leading technical team members including the mentorship of junior engineers.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams including data analysts, data scientists and domain experts.

  • Ability to adapt to new technologies and methodologies whilst protecting the fundamentals.

  • Experience working with linters, formatters and other code standards tools.

  • Informed opinions on code standards but ability to adapt to existing embedded standards.

  • Experience working with various BI tools.

  • Strong problem solving skills, with the ability to tackle complex challenges.


  • Experience with BigQuery and Apache Superset is desirable.
