Full Job Description

We are looking for an HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to join the Wales Newborn Screening Laboratory Team as the Lead Biomedical Scientist / operational manager. The Wales Newborn Screening Laboratory is part of the Department of Medical Biochemistry, Immunology and Toxicology at the University Hospital of Wales. The newborn screening service currently screens every infant born in Wales for a range of congenital and inherited disorders.
The successful candidate will manage the day to day operations of the Wales Newborn Screening laboratory service and take a lead role in the implementation of new systems, equipment and techniques as directed. They will be required to supervise a wide range of analytical procedures and will have in depth knowledge of the science behind the procedures to inform decision making.
Reporting to the Laboratory Service Manager and the Director of the Wales Newborn Screening Laboratory, they will ensure the delivery of a high-quality service that meets regulatory and operational performance targets.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone to develop their leadership and management skills in a dynamic department. The successful candidate will have a positive approach to the role. They will be able to demonstrate resilience and have already established leadership skills. They will also demonstrate key strengths in both individual and team communication and will have an in-depth knowledge of the science behind the service., The post holder will provide leadership and have operational oversight and autonomy within a section of the department. They are the lead BMS in their functional group, responsible for providing expert advice and support to service users locally, regionally and nationally. They provide professional management leadership for all staff assigned to their section, over a wide range of specialised diagnostic techniques required to deliver a fit for purpose clinical laboratory service. The post holder will liaise closely with the Laboratory Service Manager and Clinical Lead, providing timely and accurate information concerning all aspects of service provision within their area.
This remit includes:
- The technical and scientific robustness of analytical equipment and techniques
- System trouble shooting
- Monitoring/Maintenance of turnaround times,
- The continued competency of staff within the section to provide a full service
- Interpreting laboratory results and providing appropriate technical advise
- The maintenance and review of internal and external quality assurance
- Compliance with national quality standards e.g.ISO 15189,
- The efficient use of financial, material and human resources
