Full Job Description

As a Lead Operator, you will be at the forefront of our production line, ensuring that operations run seamlessly and that food safety and quality standards are met. You'll not only have excellent technical knowledge of the machinery but also be a leader on the floor-ensuring your team is well-trained, motivated, and performing at their best.

  • Champion SHE Standards: Work to high health and safety standards, challenge unsafe practices, and encourage positive SHE behaviors in your team.

  • Compliance Leader: Ensure that all operatives are adhering to health, safety, and environmental guidelines, keeping the work environment safe for all.


  • Food Safety & Quality:
  • Food Safety Expert: Work to maintain food safety and quality standards, managing Critical Control Points (CCPs) with precision.

  • Quality Assurance: Conduct regular checks on operatives to ensure proper procedures are followed, paperwork is completed accurately, and products meet quality expectations.

  • Hygiene Excellence: Lead by example, promoting Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and ensuring that work areas are consistently clean, organized, and safe for production.

  • Documentation & Verification: Complete and verify production paperwork, ensuring everything is signed off as per site procedures.


  • Leading People:
  • Team Rotation & Management: Support the Group Leader by ensuring staff rotation, managing breaks, and overseeing smooth and timely changeovers. Make sure all staff have meaningful and productive tasks.

  • Staff Training: Train and brief operators and new starters, ensuring they meet safety and performance standards before they begin work on the line.

  • Welcoming New Starters: Ensure new team members feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to ask questions as they learn the ropes.

  • Leadership Support: Be prepared to step in and cover for the Group Leader as needed, ensuring smooth day-to-day operations without taking on broader people management responsibilities.


  • Driving High Performance:
  • Efficiency Focused: Manage the area efficiently, ensuring the right amount of staff and materials are in place, and working closely with other departments to keep production running on schedule.

  • Performance Monitoring: Regularly monitor and report on line efficiency, identifying and addressing issues that could impact performance.

  • Machine Operation & Troubleshooting: Set up, run, and make quick, accurate adjustments to machinery during changeovers. Troubleshoot equipment issues independently, escalating only when necessary.

  • Continuous Improvement: Actively contribute to process improvement, identifying opportunities for greater efficiency and implementing solutions on the ground.

  • Maintenance Collaboration: Work closely with engineers and the Group Leader to report any machinery failures or potential risks beyond your control.

    Leadership Skills: You can motivate and lead by example, ensuring your team is productive and adhering to safety and quality standards.

  • Technical Expertise: You have strong knowledge of food production machinery and equipment and can troubleshoot problems with ease.

  • Team Player: You collaborate well with others, from production staff to engineers, to ensure smooth, efficient operations.

  • Attention to Detail: You can identify inefficiencies, quality issues, and safety concerns quickly and take corrective actions.

  • Communication Skills: You can brief and train team members effectively, fostering a learning environment where new starters feel confident and supported.
