This position primarily involves the independent oversight of the Human Volunteer Programme Phlebotomy Service (Blood Draws Programme) now combined in UK, providing fresh samples from staff to all Labcorp UK sites on demand. The successful candidate will have previous Phlebotomy experience and be comfortable managing the training and supply of our phlebotomists and managing this process across Labcorp UK sites. Ensuring business unit compliance with global human research, data protection legislation and Research Ethics Committee Approved Projects for the sourcing and use of staff sourced biological matrix is crucial to the success of the position. The position offers hybrid working and we welcome applicants seeking either full-time or part-time hours

  • Duties Include:
  • Enabling routine supply of staff sourced fresh whole blood matrix to support Lab service offerings to clients as appropriate
  • Working cross-functionally with all relevant parties (e.g. project management, study direction, operations, regulatory and Occupational Health) to resolve HBS related issues
  • Providing resource management, training and competency of 20+ phlebotomists, occupational health facility, organising blood draws, maintaining confidential donor database in support of the HVP
  • Performing all aspects of the venepuncture procedure and where possible plasma collection, including procedure, room and kit set-up, donor monitoring and room maintenance management. Performing venipuncture on donors using suitable methodology for volumes required, evaluating vein performance of the donor to identify possible problems; making necessary corrections in order to expedite donation time and ensure product quality and donor safety, collecting whole blood samples for testing, monitoring donor for any reaction
  • Performing Informed Consent appointments with prospective and active donors as required
  • Educating new donors on the use of donated HBS. Consents donors. Providing information to answer any queries as required
  • Explaining the process, the tests, the appointment system, proper hydration and other information pertinent to the donor. Answering donor's questions timely, accurately and professionally
  • Performing accurate and timely update and maintenance of donor databases and specimen information logs as required
  • Alerting HVP Admin of donor issues that may impact HVP to deliver. Maintaining confidentiality of all personnel, donor and HVP information
  • Recording any incidents that occur during or following the venepuncture process, volume variances and donor adverse events following the procedure
  • Increasing regulatory oversight of all activities that may impact safety, quality, identity, integrity and security of any HBS collected, processed and shipped from the HVP Site
  • Working to ensure the HVP operates in a state of compliance with all written procedures, national and international regulations as applicable
  • Performing site inspections on a regular basis and accurately report all findings. Completing new role training and annual competency assessments when necessary
  • Supporting HTA Designated Individual in provision of ethical management of Human Tissue donations from Labcorp staff.
  • + Maintain compliance with the UK Human Tissue Act + Adhere to all Labcorp HBS / HTA policies and processes + Maintain ethical standards; informed consent and IEC approval for each procedure. + Review daily/weekly schedule with HVP team and make schedule adjustments as needed + Promote team work, cohesiveness and effective communication among coworkers
  • Working with Global Human Tissue Designate to maintain strategic relationships and harmonized process with appropriate Independent Research Ethics Committees responsible for Staff Matrix projects to enable high level discussions in support of our global business activities
  • Providing support / cover to administration and management of human volunteer programme for Labcorp UK and HBSM/HTA
  • Maintaining ability and skill set to manage the process for donor recruitment, management, scheduling and sample collection.
  • Managing sourcing of staff sourced matrix from consenting staff donors for use by the business, to include: blood, urine, faeces, sputum, buccal cells as required
  • Developing a working knowledge of the requesting departments / business units requesting staff sourced matrix and is able to apply that knowledge to ensure complete requests are made and process followed to deliver matrix required
  • Following up on outstanding matrix requests for resolution to meet internal and external client deadlines and to minimize business and legal risk

  • Education / Qualifications:
  • Phlebotomy certification from an accredited agency. Experience may be substituted for education
  • Skills / Experience:
  • Previous experience as a phlebotomist and an in-depth knowledge of phlebotomy duties, responsibilities and techniques required
  • Trained in taking Informed Consent from research subjects / staff
  • Mentoring of staff Phlebotomists
  • Ability to work in a high volume, fast paced environment
  • Strong communication, presentation, teamwork and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to be persistent while maintaining tact
  • Proficient with computers and industry standard I.T software with the ability to utilize word processing software, database, spreadsheet, and specialized software
  • Ability to plan, multi-task, organize and prioritize
  • People management skills advantageous
