Full Job Description
We have an exciting opportunity for two Learning and Engagement Assistants to join Southampton City Council (SCC). One of these positions will be 0.8 (29 hours a week) and in a permanent capacity and the other will be on a full-time (37 hours a week) but fixed-term basis (for 9 months).
About the team and role
Southampton Cultural Services operates three visitor attractions within the city: Southampton City Art Gallery, SeaCity Museum and Tudor House and Garden. Our visitors range from local communities through to neighbouring county residents and tourists.
As part of the Learning and Engagement Team you will have responsibility, alongside the Learning and Engagement Officers, for delivering the learning programme across our multiple venues, engaging with visitors of all ages and abilities. You will be required to deliver learning sessions to a wide range of audiences from Early Years to adult groups on topics linked to both history and art.
We are a small team and operate a busy service, so weekend and evening working will be a requirement of the job. As well as delivering sessions in our venues we work in the wider community and online. Therefore, experience of outreach and teaching via digital platforms is preferable. As part of this, physical outreach (teaching in external venues) will be necessary, so the ability to get to venues with materials and resources will be a regular part of the role.
You will be motivated and creative with at least a year teaching or relevant museum / gallery education experience. Ideal candidates will be organised with excellent customer service skills. Knowledge of practical art techniques or a creative eye are necessary skills alongside an interest in using museum displays to inspire heritage workshops. This is a delivery-focused role, so you will need to love working with audiences of all ages!
