Full Job Description

  • To deliver world-leading research in enzyme design and engineering in collaboration with Prof Anthony Green, as judged by high quality publications.
  • To deliver outstanding teaching and learning to our undergraduate and postgraduate students, through lectures, on-line and blended teaching, small group teaching and laboratory classes, and through supervision of individual and group research projects;
  • To contribute to the efficient management of the Department, helping to maintain and grow the collegiate and supportive atmosphere we have established.

    We seek to appoint an outstanding and ambitious early career scientist to a Lectureship in Chemical Biology in support the research of Prof Anthony Green. You will be expected to contribute enthusiastically to teaching and management while carrying out research both independently and in collaboration with Prof. Green. We are seeking an outstanding scientist with broad research interests encompassing enzymology, biocatalysis, organic chemistry and computational enzyme design., A PhD degree and postdoctoral experience in biocatalysis, enzymology, or enzyme design or equivalent experience.
  • Outstanding research ability in enzyme design.
  • A track record of high-quality publications in an area of biocatalysis, enzymology, or enzyme design.
  • The ability to manage own research, teaching and administrative activities, with guidance if required.
  • The ability to teach all aspects of core chemical biology.
  • An ability to develop and grow a research portfolio of original and exciting ideas in collaboration with Prof Anthony Green.
  • A track record of writing up research work for publication.
  • A willingness to continually update knowledge and understanding.
  • An ability to translate knowledge of advances in the subject area into new research activity.
  • An ability to obtain external funding to support research activities in collaboration with Prof Anthony Green, drawing money from a range of sources including research councils, industry and international organizations.
  • An ability to develop an international profile in the field of enzyme design, and the potential to become a world-leading researcher in the area.
  • An ability to develop collaborations across the University, as well as externally with national and international researchers, as appropriate, to advance research.
  • A willingness to become an excellent and committed teacher of chemical biology, showing adaptability and imagination in designing and delivering excellent chemistry teaching.
  • A commitment to working in a collegial and supportive way to maximise the performance of the Department of Chemistry.
  • Experience of team working and the ability to liaise with colleagues and students on joint projects.
  • A willingness to maintain a safe working environment for themselves and students at all times.
  • Ability to engage and collaborate with a diverse team.
  • Excellent time management, organisational and communication skills, including when communicating material of a specialist or highly technical nature.
  • The experience and proven ability to supervise and train postgraduate students and final year undergraduate Masters students in laboratory work, including training in laboratory procedures and in safe working.
  • A commitment to develop and further the careers of members of the Green research group.
  • Balance, with help, the competing pressures of research, teaching and administrative demands and deadlines.
  • Understand equal opportunity issues as they may impact on areas of research content., A track record of obtaining funding to support their research activity.
  • The experience and proven ability to supervise and train postgraduate students.
  • Proven ability to conceive, undertake and direct research.
  • Evidence of successful interdisciplinary and/or multidisciplinary research experience.
