Full Job Description

From issuing claims and attending hearings across the country, to advising senior stakeholders on high profile contracts and assisting our debt recovery team. This is a rare opportunity to join our high performing and friendly team.

As a Legal Counsel, you'll assist the Corporate & Customers Litigation Team to provide a pro-active, preventative and commercially relevant legal service to EDF's Customers business unit (which carries out a range of activities from supplying electricity and gas to commercial and residential customers, to delivering energy services solutions) and the Corporate & Steering Functions (CSF) (which is responsible for various internal functions including employment, litigation, supply chain, corporate finance, transactions and board support).,

  • Full support with all contentious matters across Customer and Corporate by providing full end-to-end claims management, including defending claims made against EDF Energy as well as bringing claims made on behalf of EDF Energy.

  • A focus on recovery action for non-payment of energy charges.

  • End-to-end litigation management from sending a Letter of Claim to attending court and enforcing judgment.

  • Managing a large caseload with the ability to diarise court deadlines.

  • Providing a timely, preventive and commercially relevant legal advice to the business unit or CSF which can relate to contractual, transactional, statutory and regulatory issues. As Legal Counsel on litigious matters you may also be expected to provide advice on commercial contractual matters (including negotiation of such terms), advise clients on escalated matters of complaint and/or investigations relating to contractual, statutory and regulatory issues affecting the Corporate & Customers business unit.

  • Working closely with Business Partners within the relevant areas of the business to understand their objectives and business drivers and to identify current and future legal requirements.

  • Demonstrating ability to oversee performance of the litigation function (i.e. ensuring visibility of all claims brought by/against EDF) and provide reporting to the Managing Legal Counsel, Head of Legal, Legal Affairs Director & General Counsel, control of budget(s) and legal spend to provide reporting to the Legal Affairs Director & General Counsel to ensure that Corporate & Customers Legal achieves strong financial and ethical performance, along with managing & training less qualified members of the team.

    We anticipate that the candidate will have 0-2PQE but are open to candidates with appropriate experience and mindset.


  • The candidate will have proven experience as litigator in-house and/or litigation department of law firm. You will also have the confidence, desire and experience to conduct advocacy at County Court levels in preliminary hearings, Applications and Small Claims Hearings.

    A working knowledge of the Civil Procedure Rules and a desire to keep abreast in this fast-moving area of law.

    You'll have experience of the ability to work independently with a high priority caseload, as well as experience managing outsourced matters and supervising other counsel to ensure the Litigation department maintains effective and efficient in case management for all contentious matters.

    You'll also have experience managing external law firm(s) and counsel on outsourced matters to ensure matters are handled within budgets & business interests preserved, ensuring internal cost approvals obtained and invoices paid on time.

    Supporting business clients on strategic initiatives (predominately in debt recovery and customer operations), you'll deliver on Business Unit ambitions whilst ensuring a good outcome on cases for EDF at minimal external spend. Experience in acting as a principal legal representative for clients on high profile, high value court cases and/or regulatory investigations with the ability to engage and brief/advise the General Counsel, Directorate and Senior Stakeholders in business on sensitive matters is also key.
