Full Job Description

We are excited to invite applications for a Locum Consultant Anaesthetist specialising in the provision of anaesthesia for Obstetrics within the Birmingham Womens Hospital NHS Trust (BWH). Due to planned expansion the successful applicant will join 12 other Consultant Anaesthetists working at the BWH.The post will also involve duties at the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB). Sessions at UHB can be tailored to the individuals interests. On-call commitments will be on the Obstetric on-call rota at BWH.

Candidates with an interest in the management of anaesthesia for Obstetrics are invited to apply. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate both extensive interest and experience within this field.

The Birmingham Women's Hospital (BWH) adjoins the QEHB site and offers a complete range of Obstetrics and Gynaecological Services including assisted conception. There are several Regional centres on site, including the Regional Cytogenetics and Regional Genetics laboratories. The hospital, in partnership with UHB, is the Maternal Medicine Regional Network Hub and also houses the Regional Neonatal Unit and Fetal Medicine Department.

BWH has around 7500 deliveries a year with extensive Fetal and Maternal Medicine departments including the regional GUCH service in addition to dedicated Renal, Rheumatology, Diabetes, Endocrine, Haematology, Cardiac, Gastrointestinal & Neurology clinics with input from relevant UHB specialists and maternal medicine obstetricians, as well as multidisciplinary pre-pregnancy counselling services for all the above specialties. In addition to the specialist clinics, there are Liver, Cardiac, Haematology, Renal and Respiratory MDTs. The Maternal Medicine team also have close links with regional Oncology, Immunology and Dermatology clinicians.

There is a 4 bedded High Dependency Unit for the care of complicated or seriously ill mothers on the delivery suite to which over 400 mothers per year are admitted. Advice or transfer for level 3 care is provided by the Intensive Care team at QEHB., We are recognised as one of the leading NHS Foundation Trusts in the UK.
