Full Job Description

The post is Emergency General Consultant Surgeon with interest in Upper GI surgery. This post has been created to add to support the current General Surgery department. The post holder will be expected to join the surgical department at the William Harvey Hospital and work as a team, supporting and enhancing the already excellent department.

Communicate and work with supporting staffs and team including other departments and tertiary centre
Accountability to Site clinical lead and Hospital medical director
Maintain GMC professional standards
Patient safety
Compliance with Datix and complaints
Clinical Governance
Audit & Research
Mandatory Training, up to date annual appraisals and revalidation as per GMC
Comply with trust internal professional standards.
Contribution to the Structured judgement reviews and learning from Deaths
Deliver consultant review of all non-elective admissions review within 12 hours of admission
Promote early and safe discharge, including the use of community providers to reduce length of stay
Develop new innovative communication pathways with GPs and patients.

Applicants must hold FRCS or equivalent and have wide experience in General, Emergency and upper GI surgery. Applicants should have experience in operating on benign upper GI conditions including experience in Nissen's fundoplication, diaphragmatic hernias, Laparoscopic CBD exploration, complex gall bladder surgery etc. Experience in abdominal wall reconstruction would be an advantage but training can be provided with one of our existing consultant surgeons, Mr Sanjoy Basu. Participation in upper GI MDM is encouraged. Prior visit to the Department is cordially encouraged. Prior exposure and independent Upper GI endoscopy skills would be advantageous.

    This post will lead to a total of eleven consultant surgeons within the department. This post will be required to be flexible to assist the speciality in delivering National Performance Standards. Emergency General Surgery provision involves having Consultant Emergency Surgeon of the week (Monday-Thursday; 0800-1800 hrs.) providing an emergency care model. This post will alternate between an emergency week followed by weeks of elective activity. The night on call (18.00-08.00 hrs.) would be covered by all surgeons with patient ownership on a rolling basis and the weekend (Friday to Sunday). The Emergency week is based at the William Harvey Hospital. Elective commitments will be provided across our other Trust sites.


  • The successful candidate would be on a 10 PA contract with provision of higher PA on mutual agreement.

    This is for a 6 month contract; there may however be an opportunity to extend to 24 months after the initial period.
