Full Job Description

Applications are invited for a full-time locum consultant post in gynaecological oncology with the aim to convert it to a substantive post.

Birmingham became home to one of the first gynaecological cancer centres in the United Kingdom in the 1970's and as such has been instrumental in the development of gynaecological oncology as a profession. Over the decades, our service has evolved and developed resulting in national and international recognition for the high-level care provided by the multidisciplinary team. We have built a particularly strong portfolio in surgery for patients with advanced ovarian cancer, recurrent cancers, vulval cancer. In addition, our Centre has a strong research history with an in-house academic programme in conjunction with the University of Birmingham. Birmingham has an excellent reputation for training and education and is one of the most prestigious gynaecological oncology training centres in the United Kingdom.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to work in a team of four clinical Gynaecological Oncologists and two academic-clinical Gynaecological Oncologists, and will be supported by a multidisciplinary team including four on-site CNSs. The Team has a strong portfolio in ultra-radical ovarian cancer surgery, pelvic exenterative surgery, minimal invasive surgery and the post holder is expected to participate in this work. Our robotics programme is well established now and we recently started our HIPEC programme. Our Team has strong links with the regional Sarcoma Centre, the colorectal, uro-oncology and hepatobiliary surgeons. Mentoring for the newly appointed consultant will be available within the team.

The Cancer Centre is currently hosted by City Hospital but our service will move to the Trust's state-of-art new site, the nearby Midland Metropolitan University Hospital in November 2024. Our Centre covers four outreach clinics and unit MDT meetings in Greater Birmingham and Walsall; the post holder will be expected to cover one of these clinics and a unit MDT meeting.

The Cancer Centre Team is committed to continue to improve and develop the service to provide the best possible care for the women with gynaecological cancers in Birmingham and the West Midlands. The Team is highly research active and the post holder will have opportunity and will be expected to participate in audits, clinical research and in representing the Centre in national and international forums.

Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWBT) is an integrated careorganisation with a budget of approximately £600 million and over 7,000 staff. Diversity and social care is at the core of what we do as the Trust provides Community and Acute Services to over half a million people in an urban centre that demands massive regeneration and has substantial premature mortality.

Our new acute hospital, the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH), opens this year and will provide care to our local population from first class, purpose-built premises. As a result, the base of this role may change to MMUH . If this is applicable to your role, you will be informed during the recruitment process and continue your application with this understanding. The development of the new hospital will play an important role in the regeneration of the wider area and in improving the lives of local people and reducing health inequalities.

We have three strategic objectives:
1. Our People - to cultivate and sustain happy, productive and engaged staff
2. Our Patients - to be good or outstanding in everything we do
3. Our Population - to work seamlessly with our partners to improve lives
