Full Job Description

1. To provide a leadership role, in conjunction with other senior members of the department of intensive care, in sustaining and developing clinical services for the residents of Hackney.
2. To maintain and develop an environment of clinical and academic excellence within the department, Clinical responsibilities
1. The care of critically-ill patients in accordance with the proposed weekly activities. This may include co-ordination of care for patients, including children, presenting to Homerton Hospital who need transfer to other institutions for continuing care.
2. The training and supervision of junior doctors in the provision of intensive care.

On-call commitment will be solely at the Homerton University Hospital NHS Trust, on a 1 in 8 basis with prospective cover.

We are a regional centre for bariatric surgery and neurorehabilitation. We are a trauma unit linked to the Royal London Hospital and routinely see over 120,000 patients a year in our emergency department. The hospital is a busy district general with over 500 inpatient beds. We actively participate in NELA and have participated in the recent COVID-19 trials.

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has 12 beds which flexibly provide Level 3 and 2 care. The intensive care team provide input into all other areas of the hospital and relationships with referring teams are excellent. We are supported by a dynamic and expanding critical care outreach service. It is an innovative unit, with a strong sense of team working and a high regard for constant quality improvement wherever possible. We are currently in the process of gaining approval for expansion and updating of the ICU.Outreach nurses currently provide day-time cover 12 hours per day 7 days a week and further support is offered overnight by the hospital at night team. An ICU follow-up clinic runs monthly.

Critical Care staffing is provided by a dedicated consultant rota and a trainee resident rota comprising a mix of ICM, anaesthesia and medicine based doctors including CT2 level with trainees from anaesthesia, medicine and emergency medicine

Applications are invited from intensive care specialists for a 12 month locum consultant post to support service expansion. Candidates must be on the GMC's specialist register or be within 6 months of obtaining this at the time of interview. The post is suitable for applicants from any acute specialty background with the necessary critical care training and experience. The post has a primary clinical responsibility to Intensive Care.

We also welcome applicants who wish to work less than full time providing the ITU commitments are honoured.

The post is based wholly at Homerton University Hospital in Hackney.
