Full Job Description

The successful candidate will be expected to be part of the team delivering general OMFS services. They would also be expected to provide a general and specialist TMJ service services for OMFS. The postholder's duties will be based mainly at John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, although there may be a requirement to visit other hospitals within the trust (Churchill Hospital, Oxford, Nuffield Centre for Orthopaedics, Oxford and Horton Hospital, Banbury) or to some of the other hospitals within the Thames Valley in Buckinghamshire, Berkshire or Wiltshire. It is a condition of the appointment that the postholder will be willing to work in any of the Trust's locations The postholder will be expected to actively participate in the supervision and training of Specialist Registrars, Foundation year doctors, Dental Core trainees and Dental SHO's. The post holder is expected to work with consultant colleagues to provide a comprehensive Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery service, achieving compliance with 18 weeks and other targets set by the Trusts and nationally. The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust. He/she will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients, and the running of his/her clinical service under the direction of the lead clinician and/or directorate chair., The successful candidates will be expected to actively participate in the supervision and training of Specialist Registrars, Foundation year doctors, Dental Core trainees and Dental SHO's. The post holder is expected to work with consultant colleagues to provide a comprehensive hospital Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery service, achieving compliance with 18 weeks and other targets set by the Trusts and nationally. The departments provide the full remit of OMFS services and the postholder will be expected to be part of the team delivering general OMFS services. They would also be expected to provide a general and specialist TMJ service services for OMFS within the Trust and working closely with Ophthalmology, ENT and Neurosurgery to deliver a high quality service. The candidate is expected to contribute in supporting TMJ related service in the region with developing local pathways and guidelines for referring clinicians. Education to primary care clinicians will be seen as a contribution towards service delivery. OUH Trust Profile Teaching/Research The post-holder will be required to participate in programmed teaching activities including training of junior dentists, doctors, nurses and other professional staff within the Trust. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The post-holder's contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review. Clinical Governance The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies. The post-holder will lead the safeguarding of high standards of care by participating in the creation of an environment in which excellence in clinical care will flourish. Personal and Professional Development The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs. Management The post-holder will be required to work within the Trust's management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trusts. He/she will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients, and the running of his/her clinical service under the direction of the lead clinician and/or directorate chair. Risk Management The management of risk is the responsibility of everyone and will be achieved within a progressive, honest and open environment. Staff will be provided with the necessary education, training and support to enable them to meet this responsibility. Staff should be familiar with the:

  • Fire Policy
  • and should make themselves familiar with the 'local response' plan and their role within that response. Responsibilities for Health & Safety The post holder is responsible for ensuring that all duties and responsibilities of this post are carried out in compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, Statutory Regulations and Trust Policies and Procedures. This will be supported by the provision of training and specialist advice where required. Infection Control Infection Control is everyone's responsibility. All staff, both clinical and non clinical, are required to adhere to the Trusts' Infection Prevention and Control Policies and make every effort to maintain high standards of infection control at all times thereby reducing the burden of Healthcare Associated Infections. All staff employed by the Trust have the following key responsibilities:
  • Staff must decontaminate their hands prior to and after direct patient contact or contact with the
  • patient's surroundings.
  • Staff members have a duty to attend mandatory infection control training provided for them by the Trust.
  • Staff members who develop an infection (other than common colds and illness) that may be transmittable to patients have a duty to contact Occupational Health.

Children's Rights The post holder will endeavor at all times to uphold the rights of children and young people in accordance with the UN Convention Rights of the Child. Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults The Trust is committed to safeguarding children and vulnerable adults throughout the organisation. As a member of the trust there is a duty to assist in protecting patients and their families from any from of harm when they are vulnerable. General The post-holder will assume a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and the proper functioning of his/her department.

    The successful candidate would be expected to be involved in both general OMFS work and specialist TMJ work. The candidate is expected to contribute in development of path way for TMJ patients at local, regional and national level. The exclusive nature of the subspeciality interest reflects the commitment needed to this subspeciality in this job. They would be expected to join the 1 in 9 on-call rota. The candidate must have full or temporary GMC registration and be on or within 3 months of eligibility of inclusion on the specialist list in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. However, later is a desired requirement.,
  • Full registration with the GMC/ Eligibility for full registration with the GDC
  • Exit Examination in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, or equivalent Possession of a Certificate or eligibility for CCT in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery or within 3 months of award
  • Experience of providing general on-call in OMFS
  • Evidence of experience in trauma and TMJ surgery
  • Experience of postgraduate and undergraduate teaching
  • Desirable criteria
  • ATLS instructor
  • On GMC specialist list for OMFS or within 3 months of eligibility for inclusion
  • Active research interest Good Clinical Practice training
  • Qualification in Health Education (eg PGC), You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
