Full Job Description

West Herts Hospitals is seeking to appoint a fixed term consultant ophthalmologist with a special interest in Medical Retina. The job is comprised of 6 Programmed Activities (PAs). Main base will be Watford General Hospital but there may be clinics at other sites within West Herts. The successful applicant will be a committed clinician with subspecialist skills in medical retina and a track record of excellent clinical service delivery, service improvement, teaching, training and other qualities as identified in the person specification. The position provides an excellent opportunity for a suitably qualified specialist to actively contribute to the further development of a modern Ophthalmology service within this highly regarded Trust, with its wide range of acute and community services, which will afford high professional visibility. The successful candidate will have a first-class opportunity to build a strong reputation as an Ophthalmologist., The successful applicant will join a team of 6 consultants in the West Herts ophthalmic department, providing a comprehensive service to the wider community. The post holder will have a job plan comprising of glaucoma clinics and surgical sessions.

  • Lead and develop a specialised medical retina service for the diagnosis and medical and surgical management of patients. The Trust is keen on increasing virtual clinics and care in all sub-specialities and will expect such clinics as part of the medical retina service.
  • Participate on a weekly basis in the running of the Urgent Eye Clinic
  • Contribute to Clinical Governance, Clinic Audit and evidence-based practice within the department.
  • Participate in teaching and supervision of undergraduates and postgraduates and other health care professionals.
  • To actively support the Clinical Director/Clinical Lead and Trust in continually developing the service, introducing new innovations and working practices and continually improving efficiency.
