Full Job Description
This post is based in the Department of Paediatric Surgery in the Great North Children's Hospital, which provides Specialist Paediatric Surgical services to the Northern Region. - There are the potential of 2 posts available - one to cover maternity leave and the other to cover lists/see new and old patients in clinic to meet the 18 week target. The post is also to ease the burden of on-call on the existing surgeons. The successful candidate may be responsible for an outreach clinic and theatre list in the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, running one day every other week. This responsibility will be shared with existing consultants.
- We expect the successful candidates to develop a specialist interest in children with congenital and acquired diseases affecting the gastro-intestinal tract and help with deliver Venous access service provision. The successful candidate will have a strong exposure and commitment to minimally invasive techniques.
- She or he should be able to demonstrate outcomes comparable to international best standards in this area of surgery. She or he should be familiar with evidence-based practice and be enthusiastic about objective analysis of surgical outcomes
- Emergency on-call duties, intended to be based on a 1 in 8 rota and will be shared with the other seven Consultants. This will include providing shared cover for dedicated paediatric emergency lists in the Great North Children's Hospital.
- Currently the on-call Consultant is responsible for the all-day emergency lists of the on-call week (4:3) which is divided into weekdays (Mon to thurs) and weekends (Fri to Sunday)
- Rostering for emergency cover will be on a departmental rota and job plans will be annualised to reflect these preferences. Our team job plans include a compulsory rest day after a period of emergency cover, with no clinical or administrative commitments.
- The appointee will also be available for emergency consultation on the Freeman Hospital (FRH) site for acutely ill children. Since Paediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery is situated at FRH it is expected that some emergency surgery may need to be carried out on these sites on occasions.
- We expect these two posts to attract 10PA's and are for 6 months with possibility of extension to 12 at the end of the term. Job planning will be annualised, but we expect this post to utilise two theatre sessions and two clinic sessions each week. We expect the appointee to be able to take up operating lists which become available because of other surgeons on-call or annual leave.
- Attendance at the weekly combined consultant ward round is expected. The round includes a weekly radiology conference and monthly audit, mortality/morbidity meetings (the latter includes review of critical incidents), pathology conference, Journal Club, and case presentation in rotation.
- The Trust supports requirements for Continuing Professional Development as recommended by the Royal Colleges and is committed to providing support for these activities.
- Office accommodation, secretarial support and a computer with Internet access will be provided. Academic:
- The appointee will be expected to take a full part in providing undergraduate and postgraduate training activities within the department. Each SHO equivalent has a named Consultant as Educational Supervisor during their post. Medical students are attached to the department in their third year and some also join in their fourth year as one of their course options
- The Trust supports CME according to Royal College guidelines and it is expected that the appointee will fulfil College requirements for CME with time and financial support from the Trust Administration:
- The appointee will be expected to undertake administrative duties in relation to care of his/her patients and in relation to running of the department and paediatric surgical services. The department lies within the Children's Services Directorate of the Trust.
- Appropriate secretarial support and office accommodation will be provided
- The appointee will be expected to participate in all aspects of the clinical governance structure developed to maintain and improve the quality of care. This includes attendance at audit and Mortality and Morbidity meetings and the main, weekly combined ward round. Teaching:
- Regular postgraduate teaching
- Audit - active participation in clinical audit is expected and time is set aside to encompass this
- Cover for colleagues' absences - prospective cover included
We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team. You will join a present team of 8 existing Consultant Paediatric Surgeons in providing comprehensive tertiary Paediatric surgical services to the Northern Region. The On-call and Emergency cover will be shared with colleagues with a frequency of 1:8. The post is mainly to fulfil the Trust objectives of greater than 95% theatre utilization by working flexibly to pick up lists which become available due to on-call commitments or leave. Additionally, the post will offer the individual to develop an interest in the subspecialty but would be mainly to cover the gap in service arising due to leave. (Gastro-intestinal surgery and providing venous access service). We wish to appoint a surgeon who is comfortable and has experience of minimally invasive techniques. The appointee will also be required to provide an outreach clinic and theatre list on a fortnightly basis.
