Full Job Description

The post holder will join our current team in caring for patients in the outpatient clinic. The postholder will support the team with inpatient, ambulatory care and urgent referrals. Inpatients are admitted under general medical teams. The post holder will support the SpR and the nurses with patient queries and liaise with hospital colleagues and GPs via the advice and guidance portal., This fits well with the operational service requirements and strategic ambition of the Department, complementing the Trust's mission statement in "Helping local people live longer healthier lives".
The Rheumatology Department is undertaking an exciting Transformation Project with full management support. We are looking to achieve optimal outcomes in terms of patient care, quality, safety and satisfaction, wait time targets, DMARD and biologics service, as well as staffing levels. We are aiming to recruit a Consultant who would be enthusiastic in contributing to the transformation, and who ideally has experience in similar projects.
Day-to-day duties include Rheumatology outpatient clinics run from a designated well-appointed area with easy access to phlebotomy and radiology.
As part of delivering a robust rheumatology service, we aim to provide a responsive Rheumatology outreach service to other departments such as the wards and ambulatory care.
Teaching of undergraduates at the Whittington site of the UCL Medical School will be a commitment of the appointee. There are 20 first year clinical students attached to the Rheumatology and Orthopaedic departments in blocks of 6 weeks. Teaching is in clinics and in group tutorials, usually 1-2 hours/week.
We would also expect the appointee to take on the Teaching lead role for UCL Rheumatology undergraduate students.
The Team is supported by 2 Rheumatology Nurses in Outpatients. There is one SpR on yearly rotational basis from the Deanery. There is substantial pharmacy support with a dedicated biologics Pharmacist who also conducts clinics twice weekly. An Advanced Clinical
Practitioner manages the inflammatory back pain service. Administrative and Management support staff including a biologics navigator ensure service efficiency.
There are good links with Orthopaedics, Physiotherapy, Occupational therapy, Chronic pain and Podiatry services. There is an infusion suite shared with Oncology for the administration of intravenous therapy.
A Consultant mentor will be assigned to support transition into the new setting.
There is support and time allocated for CPDs, revalidation and mandatory training which are a yearly requirement.
Audit will be an expected component of the job, as a department we are currently taking part in the National Early Arthritis Audit.

Duties and responsibilities of the Post:

Proposed Rheumatology timetable:
The new post holder will have a shared office in Jenner Building with access to a Desktop PC and a dedicated phone line, which is away from the clinical space to allow for better working efficiency. There are highly experienced Rheumatology Administrative Assistants, DICTATE IT3 is used for clinic letters.
The post holder should be prepared to perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances. Commitments arising in such circumstances are, however, exceptional and the post holder will not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.
There remains some flexibility around how the job plan is delivered, and the successful candidate will have the chance of discussing this further on appointment.
