Full Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Lung Oncology Support Worker to work at Ipswich Hospital, 15 hours per week. These hours can be worked as 2 days of 7.5 hours or 3 days of 5 hours.

You will be working closely with the Clinical nurse specialists (CNS) in the Lung team to support patients and ensure their care is personalised. You will provide support to our patients through telephone calls where you will assist the patient with their query or sign post them to the most appropriate healthcare professional. You will also carry out holistic needs assessments and care planning, seeing patients in clinic and the chemotherapy day unit.

You will ensure that patients' needs are met and that they are aware of the wellbeing services and support they can access. You will ensure they are referred for pre-habilitation and rehabilitation services as appropriate. You will also provide administrative support to the Lung Oncology CNS team including data collection and analysis.

The role will require you to be able to work independently although you will have close support with other teams involved in the patients care to promote, recruit and offer support.,

  • To work as an integral part of the Lung Oncology team as a support worker

  • Be responsible for the lung team telephone system, respond in a timely fashion to messages & escalate to the CNS as appropriate.

  • Accept and resolve telephone enquiries from patients regarding their care and treatment or generic enquiries, as well as triaging calls for the Clinical Nurse Specialist team and forwarding any clinical queries, to the appropriate Specialist Nurse or clinician.

  • To provide administrative support to the Lung Oncology CNS team, wider MDT & cancer network

  • To provide a communication link between hospital, patients and GPs

  • To be a key contact for all patients diagnosed with lung cancer and on the cancer pathway

  • Nurturing good working relationships with other support workers especially at the cancer units
