Full Job Description

YHA London St. Pauls are looking to recruit a Handy Person for 42.5 hours per week., Our handy person carries out repairs and maintenance to one or more of our Youth Hostels and grounds, including both planned and reactive work. They support the hostel team in delivering an excellent customer experience by ensuring fixtures and fittings are in good working order.

You will be responsible for painting and decorating bedrooms and public areas.

Our handy person is responsible for mixing paints, matching colours, preparing surfaces, and applying paint to these surfaces. You will perform touch-ups regularly or coordinate large painting projects related to the specific hostel requirements.

You will co-ordinate larger cyclical maintenance in conjunction with our central property team and the hostel manager.

Other duties may include:

  • Basic repairs

  • Plumbing repairs

  • Checking/PMVs - hair traps, fire safety checks, chasing and following up with contractors, checking rooms and basic functions including door locks and closers

  • Carpet tile replacements as and when required.

  • Attaching and removing signage and other items from walls and doors

    What Skills and Experience do you need to be a Handy Person?


  • Experience of painting and decorating is a requirement to fulfil the role of Handy Person.

    The successful candidate will ideally have the following skills and/or experience:
  • City and Guilds NVQ2 in Maintenance Operations or equivalent (desirable)

  • Proven experience of repair and maintenance duties and tasks

  • Experience of completing risk assessments to ensure maintenance tasks are undertaken safely

  • Experienced in the use of hardware tools (hand and power tools)

  • Basic understanding of electrical safety and plumbing

  • Competent decorating skills

  • Ability to work as part of a team

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to read and understand instructions

  • Good attention to detail

  • Strong time management skills

  • Well organised, with the ability to solve problems

  • Ability to adhere to health and safety guidelines

  • Knowledge and understanding of the core purpose of YHA (desirable)

  • Proficient in basic IT skills


  • Excellent communication
  • skills are required to ensure information is conveyed clearly, accurately, and convincingly. A keen ear to listen to and understand the needs of others would be an advantage.
