Full Job Description

We are seeking a dynamic and forward-thinking professional to take on a pivotal role in shaping the future of our Technical (Engineering & Electro-Tech) Officers and crew. This role is integral to our overall business strategy, where you will be at the heart of developing and managing the professional performance of our technical team, ensuring they are equipped to meet the ever-evolving needs of our business. At the core of this role is the responsibility to tackle operational risk exposure, with a focus on human factors, competence, and performance. You will be the driving force behind identifying and managing risks associated with Technical Officers and crew, playing a key role in minimizing exposure and ensuring that our Fleet operates at its peak potential. As a Maritime Subject Matter Expert (SME), you'll have the unique opportunity to collaborate across various shore functions, aligning training, rotations, promotions, and recruitment to ensure our ships are staffed with the most talented and competent professionals.   • Career Management: Oversee career progression, succession, and development for 400+ Technical Officers (3, 2, 1EO & ETO) and technical crew. Support shore line management for ranks up to 1EO/1ETO and assist in deploying career management and promotions across other ranks.
  • Workforce Planning: Set promotion criteria, manage selection and succession planning in collaboration with Resourcing. Monitor retention trends by rank and develop strategies to address root causes. Advise on team strength and make decisions on workforce deployment.
  • Collaboration with Rotations & Recruiting: Ensure technical officers and crew are correctly consulted and informed on workforce issues, as directed by senior management.
  • SME Support: Provide expert advice to Employee Relations and support trade union matters for responsible ranks.
  • Maritime Training & Competence:
  • Lead on Technical Training, advising on development, delivery, and study leave. Support the creation and maintenance of Training and Operational Performance Standards for Technical Officers based on agreed Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviours standards.
  • Work with the People team to ensure leadership and management training aligns with professional development needs.
  • People Management:
  • Monitor and manage performance of technical officers and crew, building succession plans and engaging with officers to ensure effective development.
  • Support Chief Engineers in their professional development and monitor resource risk through effective competence deployment and team strength management.
  • Track attrition and retention trends to improve engagement and retention.
  • Provide SME support for formal Employee Relations and legal cases, and serve as the ship-shore link to resolve workforce or personal issues.
  • Additional Responsibilities:
  • Manage long-term sickness cases for technical ranks to improve wellbeing and reduce sickness leave duration.
  • Track data on career progression, competence, and performance across the Fleet.
  • Ensure job descriptions are up-to-date and aligned with business needs and lessons learned.
  • Our role categories range from CUK15 (entry level) to CUK1 (Brand President) so you can clearly see internal development opportunities. This role is a CUK07 and is offered on a full time permanent basis, with at least three days based in our Southampton office.

  • Experience working in maritime industry on board ships, at 1st rank or equivalent.
  • Knowledgeable about roles of on-board technical and deck staff; including a good understanding of marine career structures and career development.
  • Familiar with STCW regulations and certification for Engine Officers
  • Good understanding of the ISM code and IMO regulations (including the MLC); in particular the impact on human factors, training and competence
  • Understanding of HELM and integration into career development for marine professionals.
  • Experience of managing and developing multi-skilled people .
