Full Job Description

To assist the Markets Manager in the day-to-day activities of the Markets Service, including the allocation of stalls, cash collection and accounting, liaison with customers and public and the daily management and enforcement of market regulations, throughout the Borough. You will be expected to be responsible for:

  • Security of buildings - opening, locking, setting/unsetting alarms.
  • Liaison with traders, members of the public, council officers, contractors and external agencies on markets related issues as directed by the Markets Manager.
  • The allocation of market stalls to traders and the collection of market and street trading fees as required, including the use of own transport to visit outlying markets and to transport a security guard escort if required.
  • The operation of financial and administrative paper-based and computerised systems for the effective management and cash accounting of markets.
  • The patrol of market areas and enforcement of market regulations as required.
  • You must be willing to spend a major part of the working day outdoors and in a wide variety of weather conditions and be able to work shifts, weekends and public holidays. You must also be willing and able to provide a car or van to transport yourself and others to sites throughout the borough and be able to provide class 1 business use insurance for the approved vehicle. Travel expenses will be paid at the agreed rates. You must be dependable, able to work under pressure and on your own initiative. And be assertive enough to enforce regulations fairly and consistently. You must also be trustworthy, honest and customer focussed. Hours: 18.5 hours per week to include Saturdays and occasional Sundays and Public Holidays worked over 4 or 5 days per week between 07.30 and 13.00.
