Full Job Description

You will work with and provide support to a group of Material Specialist Engineers, who provide technical solutions to materials related problems, related to the manufacture of flight hardware. Assist in defining the qualification of materials for various mission specific requirements. Help in the researching of new materials and processes to improve performance for future applications.

You will fully use your knowledge of metallic and non-metallic material properties, and be expected to develop your understanding on how materials perform in a space environment (radiation, thermal, vacuum).Working within a team or individually, you will interface with people at all levels - Shop Floor, Project Teams, Engineers, through to management and Customers.

What you will be doing:

The activities you may undertake during the placement year will vary between:

  • Participate in materials and processes selection, development, evaluation and qualification programmes for spacecraft;

  • Problem solving, data analysis, present findings;

  • Assist in researching new materials and their applicability to spacecraft;

  • Develop reporting and communication skills;

  • Develop knowledge of spacecraft materials and processes engineering;

  • Apply knowledge gained at university in a commercial environment.

    Working towards a Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Physics Degree, Chemistry or related degrees;

  • Interested in developing themselves by learning from the team and from the work that you undertake;

  • Strong team player;

  • Positive attitude towards completing tasks;

  • Problem solving., This job requires an awareness of any potential compliance risks and a commitment to act with integrity, as the foundation for the Company's success, reputation and sustainable growth.

    The materials and processes team works on telecoms, earth observation, navigation and science programmes, with some science missions focusing on planets such as Mars, Venus and others. We ensure that the materials and processes used on these spacecraft are fit for the mission environment.
