Full Job Description

To provide a high standard of midwifery care and to lead and support a multi disciplinary team of staff according to University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust (UHSussex) Policies and Standards.

To act as an expert clinical Lead for Maternity Triage / Maternity Assessment Unit, providing professional advice to other midwives within these settings, to deliver high quality, modern, women and family centred services.

The post holder will be required to ensure the smooth daily running of Maternity Triage. Encompassing National Agendas, to lead by example and provide clinical supervision.

The post holder will have management responsibility for the efficient running of the Maternity Triage department at PRH.

The post holder will be an expert in the assessment, planning and implementation of antenatal and postnatal care. They will take overall responsibility for developing specialised programmes of care for women attending Maternity Triage, working closely with other health professionals to ensure individual packages of care are created to maximise best practice.

Ultra-sound scanning skills would be an advantage. The post holder will be included on the Manager On-Call rota to support operational management of RSCH and PRH.

Main duties of the job

As a Trust we are currently one maternity service across four clinical sites and the community. This role would involve occasional working across both sites in Brighton and Haywards Heath providing leadership to the maternity team, but predominantly will be based at our Princess Royal site.

This pivotal post will promote clinical and non-clinical leadership in professional midwifery practice and be responsible for high standards of care within the delivery suite setting.

As a Band 7 you will need to have had considerable band six midwifery experience and a sound knowledge of all aspects of intrapartum care.

The successful applicant will be an experienced midwife and able to demonstrate effective leadership and communication.

  • A clear understanding and application of the principles of professional accountability and confidentiality.

  • Ability to provide care to pregnant people before, during and following birth.

  • Ability to deal with issues of Risk management within the team context.

  • Ability to organise, prioritise and coordinate own and others work within a team setting.

  • Ability to manage a area / ward budget and resources.

  • Ability to lead, manage, communicate and motivate all staff


  • within sphere of responsibility.
  • Evidence of involvement and leadership in teaching and mentoring learners.

  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.

  • Flexible and positive leadership style and approach to work.

  • Able to act as a midwifery specialist advisor to team members and other professional groups.

  • Understand organisational management., Degree or equivalent

  • Registered Midwife.

  • Evidence of clinical and managerial expertise and knowledge acquired through CPD.


  • Desirable criteria
  • 3 years experiance

  • Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS).

  • Advanced Life Support Obstetrics (ALSO) or equivalent
