Do you want to use your technical skills and interests to contribute to the treatment of patients?
We are seeking an enthusiastic candidate for an exciting opportunity to undergo an apprenticeship in mechanical engineering. The 4-year apprenticeship combines work-based training alongside experienced engineering technicians in the Radiation Physics mechanical workshop at Charing Cross Hospital, with fully funded block-release study at local college.
You will gain a BTEC National Diploma at Level 3 Engineering Technician Standard as well as the technical skills and knowledge to support your career in mechanical engineering. At a local college, you will learn the core skills of engineering and obtain an understanding of safe workshop practices before developing a more advanced and in-depth focus in design, development and manufacture of medical devices.
As a member of the mechanical engineering workshop team, you will work alongside the electronics engineers to maintain, repair and service linear accelerator treatment machines. Within the workshop, you will be trained to design and manufacture components which support treatment within the Radiotherapy department and also manufacture parts for the wider Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
You will train to use CAD to design parts & assemblies and produce engineering drawings. You then have an array of machinery to manufacture your parts; 3D printers, milling machines; lathes, grinders and MIG/TIG welders., + The Mechanical Workshop Apprenticeship scheme is a 4 year training programme which combines on-the-job training with academic study.
+ The post-holder will undertake a BTEC National Diploma training to a Level 3 Engineering Technician Standard. They will specialise as a machinist, to receive the required academic training for the role.
+ The Post-holder will be a trainee member of the team, which is responsible for undertaking the design, development and manufacture of complex new medical devices and research equipment that fall within the remit of the Mechanical Engineering team. The Post-holder will have the opportunity, under supervision, to design parts and assemblies using CAD programs and learn to use workshop machinery to manufacture bespoke components.
+ The Post-holder, under supervision, will assist in carrying out the Planned Preventative Maintenance, servicing and repair of a range of complex, patient-critical radiotherapy equipment in a manner, which is safe, efficient and effective, and with the minimum of downtime.
+ The Post-holder will receive internal training from the team of mechanical and electronics engineers, in addition to their academic training.
+ On successful completion of the apprenticeship and workplace learning competencies, the post holder will be eligible to become, a Band 4 Radiotherapy Engineer.
