Full Job Description

The Intensive Care Unit Support Section of Biomedical Engineering is looking for an experienced individual to join a small team of technicians responsible for management and maintenance of the hospitals stock of mechanical ventilators as well as support for a range of equipment used across the Trust's three intensive care units. . You will be required to interact with all levels of medical staff providing equipment training and advice. The role involves a significant amount of time on the intensive care units working closely with patients and medical staff, occasionally in pressurised situations The ICU support section provides clinical and technical support to the intensive care areas for all ventilators and respiratory support systems as well as supporting the use of other intensive care unit equipment. The main role involves the daily preparation and function testing of machines, and supporting medical staff in their use of the equipment. The section also carries out all
maintenance and repairs on the equipment it manages requiring some technical knowledge and practical bench skills. The job will primarily involve working in the ICU support section but rotation to other sections within the department will be required based on service needs.
Please note applicants must be able to attend an interview in person at GOSH due to the practical nature of the role we need to be able to assess technical skills.

+ Removal of medical equipment at the bedside ensuring sensitivity of patient and family circumstances are taken into consideration at all times.
+ Prepare and supply the Intensive Care wards with an appropriate ventilator as required for booked admissions, post operative patients and emergencies.
+ Participate in ITU ward rounds. Provide clinical advice on appropriate ventilators and respiratory support system used.
+ Keep careful records of all work performed and complete other appropriate records
+ Inform the BME manager and other BME staff of the condition and performance of the equipment within the post holder's care
+ Teach and train other staff groups (doctors, nurses, allied healthcare professionals, technical staff, etc.) in the operation and care of basic medical equipment
+ Train other technicians in a range of techniques and methods used in the BME department
+ Keep abreast of technical developments. Enrol in appropriate continuing professional development programmes. Attend suitable seminars and courses as part of personal development and to further the work of the department.
+ Support the Implementation of, and help to ensure compliance with, an accredited quality system in the areas of work for which the Post holder carries responsibility
