Full Job Description

The Medical Illustration Service provides a clinical and non-clinical photographic/videographic service as well as a graphic service to the entire trust across all sites.
The post holder will be responsible for providing a good quality clinical photography and videography for diagnosis, case records, education, research and publication, in all hospital areas i.e. wards, studio, operating theatres and outpatient clinics.
Responsible for providing a good quality general photographic support service for patient information, research, publication, and education.
To be involved with the graphics service and income generation projects within the department when required.
To guide junior/administration staff as directed by the senior clinical photographers, in their absence.
Help to improve current protocols and developing/implementing new services. An ability to adapt to new circumstances will be essential.

On-Call

1. To undertake accurate clinical photography/video of patients requested by healthcare professionals for medical records, teaching, publication, medico-legal and research, ensuring ethical practices are followed across multiple specialities including, but not limited to, dermatology, plastic surgery, tissue viability, orthopaedics, urology, paediatrics, major trauma.
2. Demonstrate professional patient management skills using tact and diplomacy to fully inform the patient on the photography process ensuring relevant, informed consent is gained and understood. In particular when it is of a highly sensitive nature (genitalia/trauma/NAI/end of life/bereavement) or if the procedure is extremely difficult to understand.
3. Have knowledge of medical conditions, terminology and anatomy to determine the most appropriate technique to record a condition.
4. Responsible for ensuring patients receive relevant information to be able to give 'informed' consent, and that the patient is Gillick competent, where appropriate, by ensuring: A record of any issues/discrepancies are in writing for future reference, this includes patients/relatives who are emotionally volatile, or their first language is not English.
5. Be responsible for ensuring quality of all photography produced within the studio, ward, theatre and outpatient setting is of a highly professional nature. That the condition has been accurately interpreted and the correct lighting technique has been used to ensure it is clinically and legally valuable, measuring against recognised national/local standards.
6. Being mindful of cultural and religious views and beliefs, to ensure all patient's and customers specific photographic needs are fulfilled, and that clinical priority are met.
7. To ensure recording of images in the operating theatre, trauma units and wards, are undertaken with speed, dexterity and accuracy to ensure that the patients' treatment is not delayed or disrupted.
8. To undertake intraoral photography within Health and Safety requirements.
9. To produce high quality images and video using advanced technical skills in computerised image manipulation, ensuring it is reproduced accurately and with no alteration of contrast, colour or tone. Being mindful of the consequences for the patient's treatment, implications for misdiagnosis and potential areas for litigation.
10. Responsible for deciding the most appropriate photographic technique to best demonstrate the patients' condition from the options available - this might include cross lighting, or use of a 'control' subject.
11. All clinical images have the potential to be used in a court of law. However non-accidental images require legal reports to accompany them and there may also be a requirement to attend court as an expert witness.
12. To maintain administrative and relevant image database systems within the department to meet all audit recommendations. Controlling access to the information in line with the Data Protection Act and Caldicott Guidelines.
13. Undertake trial photography in a number of formal Research & Development programmes on an ad hoc basis. Maintaining consistency and comparability of images and associated data.
14. Undertake end of life photography for families and patients. Work with the relevant departments to supply images to the family.
15. Requirements to adopt awkward working positions and carry heavy photography equipment across all sites.
16. Possible exposure to bodily fluids.
Policy
17. To provide basic advice and guidance to Trust staff when required on interpreting legislation and policy guidelines with regard to consent, confidentiality and photography.
18. To contribute to changes in work practices, policies and procedures, and to assist in their local implementation.
Professional
19. To work within the IMI Professional Code of Conduct and abide by relevant legislation and NHS working practices.
20. Maintenance of their personal development plan and CPD record, to include appropriate technical and professional developments.
21. Maintain professional registration.
22. Act as a role model, presenting a positive image of self, team and the organisation.
23. Assist in developing new services, improving current services, and maintaining standards.
Although this is a list of the key responsibilities of the post it is expected that the post holder and manager will develop and define the detail of the work to be undertaken. Any changes to the key responsibilities will be the subject of consultation with the post holder.
Planning and Organisational Duties
1. Manage their own workload on a daily basis to meet the demands of the service, deputising for the senior clinical photographer Band 6 when required.
2. Assisting in making effective contributions to income generation targets, being aware of photographic expenditure and participating in cost improvement schemes. E.g. consumable usage, highlighting new service potential.
3. Working closely with the senior photographer in the supervision of trainees and maintenance of service including quality control and performance review.
4. To assist in the co-ordination and organisation of complex photographic or video productions, involving the scheduling of staff, patients and accommodation to meet the deadline required.
5. To be responsible for the safe use, maintenance and storage of valuable digital equipment.
6. To maintain appropriate levels of stock to meet the photographic requirements of each individual site
7. To adopt administration roles when needed.
Communications and Key Working Relationships
1. Promoting the Trust's photographic policy on consent and confidentiality and advising Trust staff on its use.
2. Advising clinicians/staff on cameras to use for out of hours photography.
3. Training staff on the use of out of hour's cameras.
Responsibility for Finance
1. Responsible for Petty cash up to £20.
2. Recording information for invoices correctly.
3. Recording overtime accurately and updating manager.

Recruitment Information for Candidates

We are looking for a talented, highly motivated, qualified Medical Photographer to join our expanding team, based at The Royal Albert Edward Infirmary and working across all Trust sites.
The successful applicant will have proven experience in all aspects of medical photography and be able to pay close and accurate attention to detail and be able to demonstrate a wide range of clinical and non-clinical work.
As a Band 5 Medical Photographer you will be expected to hold a degree in Medical Illustration/photography or equivalent and be AHCS registered.
For those candidates who do not meet these criteria, we will consider applicants with a degree in photography or equivalent for a training position whilst you undertake a graduate/postgraduate certificate in clinical photography. You will be required to become AHCS registered on completion. If you commence as a trainee you will be paid on Annex 21 (this will be explained at interview) until you have completed your training.
