An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Medical Laboratory Assistant, with good interpersonal skills and a committed team worker to join the Microbiology department, located at the Sutton site of The Royal Marsden Hospital. The department is open to requests for flex working.
The role includes a wide variety of support tasks within the Microbiology laboratory exercising investigative, technical and decision making skills with minimal supervision, under the direction of the registered biomedical scientist staff which will include specimen reception, sample prep and processing and liaison with other hospital staff., The post-holder will perform a wide variety of support tasks within the Microbiology laboratory exercising investigative, technical and decision-making skills with minimal supervision, under the direction of the Registered BMS staff, including specimen receipt and processing (culture, serological and molecular assays), sample referral and liaison with other hospital staff.
The post holder will be expected to work in any of the 4 sections of the laboratory as required: the PCR/COVID-19 laboratory, the main laboratory; the serology section and the quality section, undertaking technical tasks as directed by the laboratory manager and senior staff and in line with departmental SOPs.
The post holder will be expected to assist in training of new staff within own areas of practice., + Deal with telephone enquiries; give results according to protocol, redirect calls to appropriate personnel.
+ To work within the limits of capability and responsibility of the post, seeking advice and direction where appropriate.
+ To participate in Trust Statutory and Mandatory training, training and assessment for specified tasks, completing programmes to a satisfactory level and providing evidence of competence.
+ To demonstrate a positive professional attitude to the work of the laboratory and other members of the team,
+ To attend laboratory meeting contributing information and suggestions for quality and service improvements.

Flu Vaccination - What We Expect of our Staff
At The Royal Marsden we have an immune compromised patient population who we must protect as much as we can against the flu virus. Each year, seasonal flu affects thousands of people in the UK. Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.
The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.

Applicants must have A levels including a science subject and have experience of working in a diagnostic laboratory. Experience of working with serology analysers and/or PCR an advantage.
