Full Job Description
We require a laboratory assistant to join our microbiology team. The post will involve supporting the department in providing diagnostic services and includes include data entry, dealing with telephone enquiries; equipment maintenance; stock control; and laboratory waste disposal. However data entry will be the main duty within this role.
This position will not support IBMS registration portfolios and is not a route to becoming a Biomedical Scientist.
We may offer a bank role if you are unsuccessful for the substantive role., + Maintains awareness of changes and developments within the section/department.
+ Receives and handles a wide range of enquiries, in person or by telephone, including matters of a confidential or a sensitive nature.
+ Basic communication with patients and staff ensuring compliance with confidentiality rules, data protection act etc.
+ Issues results in accordance with departmental SOPs.
+ Attends meetings as directed

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
+ Undertakes work according to Standard Operating Procedures.
+ Undertakes routine maintenance and troubleshooting of general laboratory equipment.
+ Undertakes preparatory work to support complex manual and automated analytical processes.
+ Checks all samples before processing for identification, status and suitability for diagnostic investigations
+ Undertakes complex manual, semi-automated and automated procedures under indirect supervision.
+ Prepares samples for sending to external reference laboratories.
