Are you looking to develop excellent clinical assessment skills? The nursing team in Pre-Op (A606) support patients and their families, through their hospital journey. We are a close and supportive department making sure our focus is on both the patient's wellbeing as well as each other's. We work alongside numerous Multi-Disciplinary Teams to provide pre and post-surgical care to both patients, and their families. We ensure our patients are well informed of their planned surgery, answering questions and making sure concerns are addressed appropriately. We are close, supportive and welcoming department, and ensure that we focus on both, the patient's wellbeing and needs, as well as each other's. Recent surgical ward or theatre experience would be an advantage, however, should you be newly qualified or hold acute nursing experience, full training is provided and you will be fully supported throughout your time in our department. Please note this vacancy is not suitable for Nurses that need to complete their OSCE exam. Hours full-time hours across 4 days

  • You will develop evidence based and patient centred assessment skills, to ensure our patients are fit for surgery. The role is crucial in preventing and minimizing procedure related complications and helping to avoid same day cancellations of surgery. Day to day, you will carry out patient assessment and medical history to ensure that patient's preoperative care needs, both physically and emotional are met. Your role will require you to assess our patients' fitness for complex and minor surgeries, as well as admitting and preparing patients for theatre on the day of admission. You will work with a wide variety of healthcare professionals across the Trust such as : Consultants, Anaesthetic Teams, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Prehabilitation Team, Enhanced Recovery Nurses, Clinical Nurse Specialist and ENT Nurse Practitioners, making this the optimum opportunity to network and connect across UHBW!, Anonymous information will be used from your application in order to ensure we're meeting our pledge.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care and Pre-Operative patient care, and plan for safe and timely discharge following surgery.
  • Following training, to practice advanced nursing skills, for example : History taking, Physical Assessment, Diagnostic reasoning, Venepuncture, Cannulation, understanding ECGs.
  • Utilise patient group directives (Medication) as required.
  • Communicate effectively and maintain confidentiality with patient carers and the multi-disciplinary team. Give written and verbal advice / teaching to patients and carers.
  • Provide accurate timely contemporary records of care and treatment in line with UBHT record keeping policy and NMC.
  • Work within Trust Nursing policies and procedures and professional boundaries undertake all appropriate aspects of Nursing Care required including specific relevant clinical skills gained following appropriate training instruction.
  • Promote and maintain a safe environment for patients : Administer medicines in accordance with Trust policy. Promote a clean environment and the prevention of hospital acquired infections.
  • Respond positively and act promptly to resolve problems / issues for patients / carers, utilising complaints procedures and PALs where appropriate.
  • Assist with the smooth running of the clinical area by carrying out other duties such as unpacking stores, tidying and cleaning up equipment.
