Moorfields is one of the world's leading eye hospitals, providing expertise in clinical care, research and education. We have provided excellence in eye care for more than 200 years and we continue to be at the forefront of new breakthroughs and developments. We are an integral part of one of the UK's first academic health science centres, UCL Partners, and recently celebrated five years as one of the country's first NHS foundation trusts.

Our main focus is the treatment and care of NHS patients with a wide range of eye problems, from common complaints to rare conditions which require treatments not available anywhere else in the UK. The unique case-mix and volume of our larger services means that our surgeons can develop expertise in different areas of the sub-specialty.

The Medical Retina Service at Moorfields Croydon is well established and highly specialist, treating all aspects of medical retina pathology and caring for many patients with diabetic retinopathy. The complex patient demographics and the challenging pathology at patient presentation requires consultant and senior ophthalmic specialist input for a significant amount of the clinical workload.

The Medical Retina service treats a wide spectrum of patients presenting with retinal diseases, including diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration and vascular occlusions. In 2023/24 the service saw a total of 18,451 outpatients and saw a further 6,289 patients for intravitreal injection.

Moorfields is an important research institution and each individual will be expected to contribute to research, teaching, and training within the Service. As a result the Trust has a policy conveying intellectual property, which may apply to you.

Study leave is granted prospectively by the Study Leave Sub-Committee, following Consultant approval and is subject to agreement by the Clinical Management Board. A minimum of 10 weeks' notice is required to permit adjustment of planned clinical work.

The Clinical Tutorial Complex, with well-equipped Seminar Rooms and a large modern lecture theatre, provides the principal location for courses and lectures organised by the Post Graduate Medical Education Centre. There is also a skill laboratory, which provides microscopes and other equipment for surgical training.
