Full Job Description

The Communications Office is responsible for the House of Commons communications strategy, delivering internal and external communications to and on behalf of the whole House, as well as learning and development for the profession and delivers significant bicameral communications on behalf of the House of Commons and House of Lords. The team sits within the Office of the Executive and provides communications support (including branding and design, social media, photography, a 24/7 press office, internal communications, planning and comms strategy) to all House teams., The House of Commons is looking for a Midweight Graphic Designer. This is a high-profile role sitting at the heart of the Communications Office for the House Administration.

As a multi-disciplined Midweight Designer your primary role will be responding to creative briefs, delivering work with brilliant creative ideas, and exceptional design and craft skills. Working in collaboration with the design team which includes the Creative Lead, Brand Designer and Senior Creative Studio Manager, and the wider Communications Office, you will be responsible for ensuring our creative work meets expectations across print and digital touchpoints.

You'll be working on varied design projects, including promotional campaigns for internal and external audiences, long-form reports, exhibitions and digital content. You'll demonstrate brilliant people skills as you work with a variety of clients and stakeholders across a complex organisation.

The role will involve producing work within our brand identity system. You'll be comfortable working with brand guidelines, while also showing initiative and creativity in developing and evolving our visual identity.

The Mid-Weight Designer works on a range of projects simultaneously: autonomously and in collaboration with colleagues in the Design Team and wider Communications Office.

You will deliver on briefs from internal business areas such as the Education and Engagement team, Parliamentary Archives, Historic Furniture, the Speakers Office, and Committees, working with the Creative Lead and Brand Designer to interpret, apply and develop the House of Commons and UK Parliament brand identities. And work with digital colleagues to support the strategy and output of the House of Commons, House of Lords, and UK Parliament social media accounts.

Some of the responsibilities for this role include:

  • Develop innovative, creative, and compelling design solutions for print and digital touchpoints to capture internal and external audiences.

  • Use influencing and negotiating skills to work collaboratively with other communications colleagues across Parliament to clarify and agree design approach to deliver against the Communications strategy.

  • Work closely with internal stakeholders to ensure content is signed off by relevant parties before being published.

    To be successful in this role you will demonstrate:

  • Highly creative with proven ability to deliver imaginative and compelling visual communications for a diverse range of audiences, taking responsibility for projects from initial brief to completion.

  • Thorough understanding and knowledge of typography and grid systems. Proven ability and expertise in Adobe Creative Cloud, and a sound knowledge of artworking, print and digital processes.

  • Openness to learn, with a focus on own professional development. An ability to accept and improve from feedback, with a focus on gaining new skills and knowledge and keeping abreast of emerging industry trends and technological advancements.

  • Excellent time management and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise effectively, work independently and collaboratively at pace, to ensure that multiple projects are delivered against tight deadlines and to quality standards.
