Full Job Description

To ensure the health and safety of pupils at lunchtimes under the direction of the appropriate person(s) as identified by the school.

To actively promote and safeguard the welfare of pupils within the school.

Main responsibilities and tasks

To supervise pupils at all times during lunchtime on the school premises.

To ensure that pupils do nothing that is likely to injure themselves or others.

To follow all reasonable instructions given by the Senior Midday Supervisor, members of the SLT or the First Aid Lead.

To be prepared and as directed to work in any area(s) of the school with children of any age.

To undertake the safe and orderly transfer of pupils to-and-from all dining areas.

To actively supervise the lunchtime dining procedures assisting as appropriate pupils whilst they are taking a meal:

  • carrying of meals to the table

  • assisting with the service at the table

  • training pupils in the correct use of cutlery

  • clearing and stacking table equipment and serving dishes

  • wiping and re-setting tables

  • cleaning up food and water spillages on tables and floors


  • To positively encourage good behaviour and table manners.

    Be responsible for organising play activities in the playground or indoors if a wet playtime.

    To actively engage with pupils and avoid being passive when supervising play.

    To contribute as a member of a team to the ethos and environment of the school.

    To engage with pupils and ensure that they are active in purposeful, positive and co-operative behaviour throughout the lunchtime period.

    To liaise with members of the SLT and teaching staff of the school in dealing with problems arising from pupil behaviour and any other matters of concern.

    To be familiar with the schools Behaviour Policy.

    To record behaviour incidents and undertake follow-ups in line with the behaviour policy.

    To administer first aid as required if a registered first-aider.

    Be prepared to administer first aid in the case of an emergency when acting under instruction of a registered first-aider.

    To record accidents in the first aid incident book.

    To attend and positively engage with relevant training.

    To follow stated procedures and report in good time to the school in the case of absence due to illness.

    To perform such other duties as reasonably correspond to the general character of the post and are commensurate with its level of responsibility.
