Full Job Description

Its an exciting time for our service and we would love you to join our maternity family here the Royal Oldham Hospital.

Provide full care to women and birthing people in the antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal periods within the maternity unit.

Work autonomously within guidelines and sphere of professional practice. Build strong MDT relationships to ensure women receive safe, effective, and responsive care.

Be responsible of the assessment of care needs and development, implementation, and evaluation of care pathways.

Be expected to support unqualified staff which includes students both medical and midwifery.

Adhere to the statutory requirements for midwives in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council regulations and the Midwives Rules and Codes of practice.

Be responsible for both patient and staff information and record keeping in line with the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Security and Confidentiality Policy.

Responsibility for Patient Care.

To assess, plan, implement and evaluate midwifery care programmes from admission to discharge.

To undertake midwifery interventions consistent with evidence-based practice, transferring and applying knowledge and skills to meet women's needs.

To evaluate the effectiveness and make necessary modifications of any midwifery interventions.

To analyse and rigorously review all aspects of the women's care plan interpreting information and using knowledge and judgement to recommend new course of action where necessary.

To monitor the effectiveness of care delivery and renegotiate the programmes of care where indicated to meet the women's need.

To obtain people's informed consent and discuss the implications of the whole assessment process.

To discuss and agree short-, medium- or long-term goals, prioritise care and develop plans with the woman, family, carer and health care team.

To utilise highly developed physical skills where accuracy is important.

To refer people to other practitioners when needs and risks are beyond one's own scope of practice or require longer term support.

To liaise with the multidisciplinary team, coordinating and participating in case discussions as required.

To support patients/carers encouraging them to promote their own health and wellbeing and to express their interests and concerns.

To provide support and care for the woman and her family respecting their need for privacy and dignity.

To maintain accurate and legible patient notes (written and electronic) in accordance with Trust and national professional policies and guidelines.

Attend case conferences and plan appropriate care as required.

To assess, identify and evaluate own knowledge and practice needs in relation to knowledge and skills required to meet the demands of the job.

Professional Responsibilities

Maintains good communication and Relationships with the multidisciplinary team.

Has analytical and excellent judgment skills to ensure service users are kept safe.

Have outstanding planning and organisational skills.

Be responsible for prioritising, assessing, planning implementing and evaluating in all relevant aspects of midwifery care.

Be involved in child protection procedures where necessary.

Promote the profession of midwifery.

Maintain and develop professional competence and ensure that Nursing and

Midwifery Council requirements of registration are met.

Comply with the statutory requirements for midwives and act at all times in accordance with Nursing and Midwifery Council regulations and the Midwives Rules and Codes of Practice.

Education Responsibilities

Attend and facilitate mandatory training and update sessions.

To assess, identify and evaluate own knowledge and practice needs in relation to knowledge and skills required to meet the demands of the job.

To understand their own role and scope, identify own development needs and take responsibility for their continuing professional development and performance whilst maintaining a personal development plan.

To make effective use of appropriate learning opportunities for themselves and others and apply learning to practice and any future developments.

To act as a mentor and assessor to assigned learnings and to teach and support them through their competency assessments as required.

Clinical Responsibilities

Create an environment in which clinical care will flourish.

Maintain a high clinical profile and facilitate the application of theory to practice.

Oversee the setting and adherence to good practice standards in the interest of high-quality care.

Maintain accurate, legible, and timely written or oral reports, which inform other members of the multidisciplinary team and patients and their carer's.

Support the ward team to facilitate safe and effective care for all women.

Communications and Relationships

To contribute to the development of a learning environment.

To communicate effectively with a wide range of people to explore complex issues and to make complex decision.

To effectively communicate complex and sensitive condition related information to patients and relatives which requires empathy and reassurance.

To agree the arrangements for communication with the patient/family/carer and to document these in accordance with Trust Policy and the patients right to confidentiality.

To influence and prioritise the development of knowledge, ideas and work practice in self and others.

To encourage others to seek advice and solutions to problems.

To competently receive sensitive information concerning patients' medical condition and provide information using persuasive, reassuring skills as required, e.g. breaking bad news/special needs/dealing with anxious relatives.

To identify and manage challenging behaviours.

Planning and Organisation Skills

To prioritise the care requirements for your women.

To monitor progress of work recognising changing priorities and implement corrective actions within own limits and informing the relevant people.
