Full Job Description

At British Gypsum we are looking for a Mine Fitter to work in our small, focussed, multi-disciplinary team. Your role will be critical in ensuring production targets are met, meaning an overall positive experience for our customers. This role operates a 3-shift staggered pattern, which includes nights, afternoons, days and one weekend per month, with week 4 off. The Mine Fitter will be a part of a safety focussed, highly skilled and technically minded team based out of Marblaegis Mine, East Leake, Leicestershire. The Mine Fitter will work closely with the Shift Electrician, Mine Operatives and will be part of a growing engineering and maintenance team, ultimately reporting to the Mine Shift Manager & Mine Mechanical Engineer. Gypsum is the vital raw material at the heart of our plaster and plasterboard, and much of it is mined, milled, and made in Britain. In fact, as custodians of British gypsum reserves, we've been mining it for more than 150 years., You will be accountable for your own and your colleagues' health and safety, whilst ensuring that all work is carried out to the highest possible standard. You will be expected to have an analytical mind and be able to apply those skills to problem solving and decision making and be able to clearly communicate with others. Demonstrating a positive and proactive approach, with a continuous improvement mindset to both reactive and planned mechanical maintenance work. Accurately communicate safety issues and concerns, shift performance and status of equipment to relieving shift/personnel. Assist and carry out the planning and preparation of mine maintenance to minimise downtime. Maintenance & servicing of Joy Continuous Miners, Joy Shuttle Cars, Feeder Breakers, Scoops, Toyota manriders & Mine Conveyor systems through their associated maintenance schedules. Passionate about standards and keen to manage the underground mechanical facilities to ensure safe and continued mine production.

  • Experience with hydraulics and fault diagnosis with maintenance skills on mobile plant, conveyors, and underground mining equipment
  • Demonstrated experience as a Mechanical Fitter
  • A recognised mechanical apprenticeship (ideally have an HNC or equivalent)
  • Adaptability and common sense; this is a highly hazardous environment, so proactivity towards health and safety is a must-have
  • A positive attitude to self-development and a willingness to learn
