Full Job Description

To have joint responsibility for the specified module within the MSc Ophthalmology Programme, run by the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology (IoO), in conjunction with MEH as the UCL clinical partner. This module is a 30 credit 4 week module and therefore has two leads jointly responsible for the module. Each individual will be responsible for half the module, the details of which will be agreed with the Programme Lead, based on individual expertise. The module leads will also be expected to deliver a 'Retina Masterclass' short course., The main purpose of the post is to ensure the successful delivery of the module which consists of organisation and management of the delivery of lectures, tutorials and practical skills workshops, formative and summative assessments and the student experience. The postholder will be responsible and accountable for one module as specified above. To fulfil their duties, they are expected to work within a module team to deliver teaching, learning and quality assurance aspects of the module, in line with UCL regulations, and the student experience., Specifically, in relation to the MSc Ophthalmology the module lead will support the Programme Lead and be responsible for:
Education Leadership,

  • Inform the Programme Lead and the Programme's Senior Teaching and Learning Administrator if you are going to be away and advise who can be contacted instead, ensuring the appropriate out of office responses are in place.

  • Report students of concern to the relevant leads and administrators; in emergencies, follow UCL process for reporting students of concern.

  • Be available for student queries and respond to them, normally within three working days via Moodle Forums, email, etc.

  • Acting as a personal tutor to up to three students on the programme.

  • Act as dissertation supervisor for up to two students within your area(s) of specialism or help the Dissertation Module Leads to find supervisors in your subspecialist area as asked.

  • Attending role-related meetings, student and other promotional events including the Departmental Education Committee at UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and any sub-committees, and the UCL Graduation ceremony for the programme.

  • Providing support/identify reasonable cover for other colleagues in busy periods or when staff are on annual or sick leave.

  • Ensuring adherence to UCL's GDPR policy and retention schedules in relation to student data.

  • Actively following, implementing and promoting UCL policies, including Equal Opportunities.

  • Complete any UCL and MEH mandatory training course as required.

  • Curriculum, Teaching and Learning
  • Ensuring that the module is academically coherent and that it remains informed by research developments and other initiatives including QAA Subject Benchmark Statements.

  • Providing leadership to for the team of staff who contribute to the module and teaching for the core and optional elements of the module.

  • Ensuring that the module reflects the dimensions of the Connected Curriculum and that research-based education can be evidenced across the programme.

  • Assessment and Feedback
  • Overall responsibility for the Module assessment. Ensure awareness of local processes for assessment and marking (incl. second marking, moderation, external examiner), through a meeting with the Programme Leads and Senior Teaching and Learning Administrator.

  • Work with Programme Lead and other Module Leads to determine the content of written, practical and clinical assessment aligned with the intended learning outcomes set out in the curriculum map.

  • Participate in writing and reviewing assessment materials for formative and summative written, practical and clinical examinations and to ensure participation by module teachers.

  • Co-ordinate module assessments and course work. This includes ensuring that the overall assessment requirements at the module and programme level satisfy UCL regulations contained in the Academic Manual (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/academic-manual/).

  • Ensure the assessment criteria is clear and explicitly communicated to students and the Senior Teaching and Learning Administrator.

  • Ensure that draft exam papers are provided to the Senior Teaching and Learning Administrator before the start of term, for scrutiny by the External Examiner.

  • Exam organised locally: Attend start of the exam, liaising with the Programme's Senior Teaching and Learning Administrator regarding students with special examination arrangements.

  • Provide constructive written and oral feedback on formative and summative assessment for students to the Senior Teaching and Learning Administrator in the format and timescale as per the UCL Academic Manual regulation).
