Full Job Description

We are recruiting for Multiple sclerosis (MS) Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our Neurology team at Charing Cross Hospital Hammersmith for a 12 month maternity leave fixed term/secondment.

The MS CNS role is a vital part of the MDT approach to managing and supporting patients presenting with acute stroke symptoms, as well as the chronic and lasting effects of MS.

This role will allow you to develop wider specialist knowledge and skills working in close collaboration with the other Stroke specialist practitioners within the team.

You will act as an expert resource for other health professionals in relation to MS nursing and will take a lead role in the holistic assessment of patients.

The service has >3500 MS patients and has treated >2500 MS patient with disease modifying therapies and we administer the complete range of treatments available.Multi-disciplinary (MDT) team meeting occurs on a weekly basis across the sector (Chelsea and Westminster, West Middlesex and Hillingdon Hospital teams). Patients are worked up cross sector and treated locally where possible.Infusion therapies are delivered in the neurosciences treatment unit at Charing Cross Hospital by a team of infusion nurses with ward doctor support and a helpline for urgent issues. Oral therapies are managed predominantly by the pharmacy team.

Main duties of the job

o To provide sound clinical leadership and develop support mechanisms for sharing good practice within the clinical setting and Trust wide.

o Maintain and promote effective communication both verbally and in writing with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and other Wards or Departments, including formal and informal presentation of information relating to your service. Participate in MDT meeting and departmental meetings regarding MS and research.

o To assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care, providing specialist advice and actively seeking evidence based practice which will improve the quality of care and meet the needs of a group of patients.

o To assess patient on disease modifying therapy (DMT) for the appropriateness of their treatment in order to maintain high levels of clinical safety.

o To be actively involved in the development of Trust policies and procedures, providing specialist input, leading their implementation and reinforce their use.

o To take the lead in ensuring compliance to Trust policies and procedures amongst the multi-disciplinary team.

o To manage the efficient and effective use of supplies, provisions and equipment within delegated budgets.

o Be actively involved in staff education and development, including utilising appropriate learning opportunities and to act as a mentor and resource for student nurses, adaptation and unqualified members of the nursing team.
