Full Job Description

At the National Trust (NT) we raise funds in all kinds of innovative ways - from National Lottery Heritage Fund multi-million-pound grants, to strong commercial partnerships and people-powered campaigns.
Joining us as a National Grants Officer, you'll support fundraising for our highest priority projects from statutory and lottery grants.
You'll be working closely with the national grants managers and regional grants consultants, developing and supporting successful grant applications.

Your contractual location will be our head office in Swindon and there will be an expectation for you to attend the office. However, there is flexibility on where you are based at other times. You will be required to work at a National Trust location for 40-60% of your working week. This will be discussed in more detail at interview.
What you'll be doing:As a National Grants Officer you will work nationally and across the six regions and countries of the NT. You'll report to the Co-Head of Grants, and work within a collaborative national and regional grants team. You'll be responsible for making grant applications in support of the National Trust's work, as well as supporting funder relationships, and core delivery tasks related to our strategic grants delivery plan.
You'll be developing and submitting applications to a range of statutory and lottery funders, including funders such as DEFRA, National Lottery Heritage Fund and Landfill Communities Fund. You'll support a range of projects and play an active role in their development to ensure that NT plans are aligned with the funders' requirements. This will involve working closely with specialists and project teams across the NT, as well as the national and regional grants fundraisers.
You'll be sharing and researching information, supporting and leading on bids, nurturing relationships with key funders, and supporting the grants team plan.

  • Demonstrable experience of leading, developing and/or writing a range of grant applications to a variety of grant making bodies (ideally these will be in the heritage, culture or conservation sector)


  • Good understanding of statutory and lottery funding programmes


  • Experience of developing projects from idea stage through to application, and ensuring once the funding is secured our funder relationships are nurtured, and projects are delivered as per funder conditions and requirements


  • Excellent writing skills and attention to detail


  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, comfortable working with a wide range of people at all levels both internally and externally


  • Collaborative skills and eagerness to work as part of a team, sharing your ideas and learning


  • IT skills (Microsoft Office), you'll be using Word, Excel and PowerPoint every day
