Full Job Description

In this role you will be responsible for understanding and communicating our natural catastrophe exposures. You'll have a rich understanding of the perils we are exposed to and the exposures that we have which give rise to a loss. To deliver this you will lead our research agenda and oversee the regular roll up of our results. Focusing on the most material risks, you will be responsible for shaping the Hiscox View of Risk in this area and redeploying this through catastrophe models. You'll have ownership over the research agenda, prioritising in conjunction with senior management and the business units. The team: The Group Exposure Management team are part of the Group Underwriting Risk & Reinsurance team who are responsible for ensuring our largest risks are identified, understood, measured, priced and hedged effectively. The team of 30 report into the Director of Underwriting Risk & Reinsurance, who reports to the Group CUO. The team's goals are:

  • Ensure catastrophe exposures are understood, measured, and communicated and are in line with internal and external appetites - no surprises
  • Ensure best practice in risk modelling and compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Meet internal committee, regulatory, and rating agency reporting requirements
  • Support reinsurance purchase
  • Provide inputs to other internal teams - Risk/Capital, Lead on identifying which Nat Cat risks are relevant to Hiscox, deliver strategies for managing those accumulations
  • Build a deep understanding of our exposures, where we have concentrations of risk, and where we are concerned about the risk of private catastrophes.
  • Ensure that exposure plans are well understood and communicated
  • Engage with regulators and help to shape future regulatory requirements
  • Deliver the Hiscox View of Risk in this area, ensuring we remain within the catastrophe risk appetite, educating the business units to ensure they underwrite within this. Improve and evolve the processes by which we deploy this.
  • Present externally to potential investors and analysts, confidently articulating our research activity
  • Propose research agenda to senior management, using influence to gain buy in
  • Build strong stakeholder relationships with the reinsurance research analytics team, Business Unit CUOs, and senior management
  • Represent the group research function internally to business units and risk committees, linking the science to business activity
  • Define priorities for the team in terms of risks to be analysed
  • Provide thought leadership on topics relating to climate change

    Experience of Exposure Management/catastrophe modelling
  • Exemplary research skills, with a PhD in a scientific field preferred
  • Depth of knowledge of risk landscape in which we operate from a natural catastrophe perspective
  • Ability to accurately identify what emerging Nat Cat risks are relevant, and utilise research to shape the related Hiscox view of risk
  • Excellent influencing, relationship building and stakeholder management skills, ensuring the view of risk is disseminated to business units
