Full Job Description
The post-holder will work as part of a small team of coders coding inpatient activity. This will involve translating diagnoses and procedures from within clinical documentation into a series of alphanumeric codes. They will use the classifications ICD-10 and OPCS-4 (for translation) along with the trusts's coding software to enter the codes. They will work in an office environment and to tight local and national deadlines., As part of our commitment to improving the quality of coding at ELHT we are looking to enhance our coding team and drive up standards in Clinical Coding. This post will be instrumental in supporting our drive to improve our coding service. You will be part of a team that will focus on providing an accurate and comprehensive coding service to support patient care. Coding is an important function that ensures complete and accurate recording of Trust activity. This activity is used to identify trends in disease patterns locally and nationally. Reliable, accurate and up-to-date coding of information is needed to support the running of the Trust. The main duties of this post include the extraction and translation of diagnostic and procedural information into codes, entering of data on to the Patient Administration System, liaising with other hospital departments to ensure the quality of data and the validation of coded data., The post-holder will be responsible for coding inpatient episodes as part of a coding team on a daily basis. ·They will be responsible for entering ICD-10 and OPCS-4 codes on to the trusts EPR System. To this end, they should have a high level of knowledge regarding; anatomy / physiology, national / local clinical standards and also local systems that relate to the Clinical Coding process, to ensure they provide a high quality coding service. Performing Clinical Coding will require the post holder to make analytical judgements regarding complex patient documentation and to ensure they assign codes that conform to complex national and local standards. They will be required to help ensure the department meets all coding deadlines and that they help support all initiatives within the Coding department. As part of a Clinical Coding team, they will be required to manage their own work-load. They will report directly to the team lead for their team and will inform them of any issues that arise.
Senior Clinical Coders are also expected to have significant coding experience, have attained the National Clinical Coding Qualification or 5+ years coding experience, mentor junior members of coding staff and be involved in the coding validation process through clinical engagement, They will be expected to adapt in a constantly changing fast paced environment and become an expert in applying coding standards. Full training will be given and coders should have National Clinical Coding Qualification (NCCQ) or have 5+ years experience, Ideally we are looking for someone with the previous coding experience who holds the National Clinical Coding Qualification or 5+ years experience.,
- GCSE Maths and English at Grade 4 or above or equivalent
- European Computer Driving Licence or equivalent
- Accredited Clinical Coding Qualifications (NCCQ) or usually atleast 5 years plus coding experience, Significant experience at a senior level working in a Clinical Coding Environment
- Clinical Coding experience, usually 5 years., A knowledge and understanding of ICD10 AND OPCs classifications and their application in relation to national standards.
- An knowledge of medical terminology and anatomical and physiological terms.
- Experience and advanced knowledge of an EPR/Patient Administration System
- Significant experience and advanced knowledge in the understanding of NHS Clinical coding requirements , data definitions and guidelines
- Advanced Microsoft Office skills including Excel, Word and PowerPoint
- Advanced Keyboard & Mouse Skills
- Ability to work & communicate with a range of internal and external professionals
- Ability to concentrate for prolonged periods of time.
- Ability to plan own workload and use own initiative with limited support
- Ability to work to strict deadlines and display attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to mentor Junior Members of staff Desirable criteria
