Full Job Description

Our philosophy is to encourage independence, though we recognise severe dementia may require residential care. We promote well-being through person centred activities and supporting diversity.

Your New Role

Using a person-centred approach, you will look after the physical, emotional, cultural and social needs of service users. This will include personal care, assisting residents with good food and fluid intake and all other aspects of daily living.

You will be required to settle residents into bed and provide support if they wake, including night-time activities for those who do not wish to sleep, promoting the resident's mental health and well-being and improving their quality of life.

You will be a key in taking responsibility to ensure information about their health and wellbeing, is recorded on the daily record sheets and communicated to the team leader as per our legal requirement under the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to meet our fundamental standards. You will look after the needs of a diverse group of service users with a wide range of care needs, including challenging behaviour.

It will be your responsibility to ensure monitoring and hourly checks with detailed recording on daily record sheets are carried out on residents and their care needs are met.

This role will include some person moving and handling duties and there will be the need for light food preparation.

You will have patience and empathy as well as an understanding of the needs of people with different types of dementia and physical disabilities. With an understanding of the importance of a person's privacy, dignity, privacy and choice you will have good literacy, verbal and communication skills and the ability to work independently using your own initiative to make decisions and the ability to deal with emergencies in a confident manner. You will have experience in a caring role, paid or unpaid, and will be required to take part in training and development which will contribute towards you framework and study for QCF at level 2/3 or equivalent. The Service

Shearwater is in the Milton area of Portsmouth and is a purpose built 40 bed dementia residential home, which opened in August 2009. The accommodation is spread over 2 floors in units of 20 per floor. All bedrooms have a private ensuite with a shower. The home also has a good-sized garden for residents to enjoy.

We currently have around 100 staff working different roles and different shifts throughout the home.
